I got a maxtor 160gb that's running kinda hot. Speedfan is reporting it's running @ 52C and has a little flame next to it, if I touch the drive for more than a second it feels like my skin is gonna blister. Is this normal or should I look into getting a drive cooler or a new drive? The drive is mostly full I think I got like 8GB free would freeing up alot of space significantly drop the temp? thanks for the help!

Cool that thing off with a cooler for sure. Is there any airflow getting to it right now?

I've got a maxtor 160 in my desktop and it runs pretty hot as well; I'm not sure how hot is too hot so I ended up sticking a casefan in front of it and that seems to have helped keep it much cooler. Right now speedstep is reporting mine at 34c (considerably cooler than yours).

if you have the bay space there are fan models that screw ontop of HDs with dual fans. This assumes you have some kind of airflow running across the device already. If the drive is over 80% full then you're already experiencing HORRID slow-downs. Drive fullness has no correlation to heat. Fragmentation perhaps.
