Get it Here!

This software is called TeamTalk, and the latest revision is 3.01. I discovered it over the weekend while a buddy of mine and I were playing WoW and lamenting the lack of a vocal communication medium (typing when in a dungeon is just...dangerous :). We looked at TeamSpeak but decided that hey, we're already paying $15 a month each for WoW, it doesn't make sense to spend even *more* on vocal communication software, so the hunt was on. We tried a couple of packages, but this was the best by far.

I've set this up on my own server at home so my friends on WoW and I can chat during gameplay, and it works great! Surprisingly low BW consumption, and you get the Client and Server capabilities in ONE package! You can even set the server to run as a *service* that auto starts if that's your cup of tea (I set mine up that way so I don't have to worry about it).

All in all, great software, very worth downloading!

EDIT: Turns out TeamSpeak is also free, but with a bit of an unpleasant catch in the license:
If you host a Teamspeak server strictly for non-profit AND you are not a commercial entity then you will not be subject to licensing fees. Each physical server that qualifies as a non-profit organization cannot exceed 100 slots for all instances of Teamspeak running on that server. If more than 100 slots is detected by our automated tracking system, your server may be subject to review (or suspended) and you may be held liable for ATHP-based or Single Server Use-based licensing fees.

So for those who *don't* want their servers being monitored, TeamTalk is an excellent FREE alternative.

EDIT 2: Another package that's been talked about as good is TeamSound, but their website appears to be down and most Download links are no good. The one in this link actually works (verified!) and I will test and review it tonight.

I didn't think TeamSpeak cost anything unless you were going to use it for profit.

The site says something about a $4.95 a month fee, I think, and a buddy of mine was just telling me he had to pay for his next 3 months worth, so...I dunno :) All I do know is that TeamTalk=free, server and client both! :)

Edit: Wrong site! :)

Teamspeak both client and server, is free under linux and windows.
If you don't want to run your own server on your homw computer, you can rent a teamspeak server somewhere, but you pay for the rental of the server, not the software.
There was an offer for a free 10 man teamspeak server not that long ago, try to do a search.

You're right, TS *is* free for non-profit use, but it does have a licensing stipulation that many people, myself included, may not like:

If you host a Teamspeak server strictly for non-profit AND you are not a commercial entity then you will not be subject to licensing fees. Each physical server that qualifies as a non-profit organization cannot exceed 100 slots for all instances of Teamspeak running on that server. If more than 100 slots is detected by our automated tracking system, your server may be subject to review (or suspended) and you may be held liable for ATHP-based or Single Server Use-based licensing fees.

Personally, I'm not keen on anyone, even a free software provider, monitoring *anything* on my server. TeamTalk has no such stipulation and no such system, and it works every bit as well as TeamSpeak.

Anyway, it's an alternative, and choice never hurt anyone :)

Got links for those? I'd gladly add them to the thread in the main post so everyone can have easy access! :)

Or so you can organize strategy with your team mates without having to type instead of doing in-game stuff like moving to your destination :) I've discovered that in WoW strategy is crucial to ensuring that you die in 60 seconds rather than the standard 10 seconds I used to take before strategizing :)

Is it just me, or does the teamsound.com homepage have no navigation whatsoever? I want to try these other alternatives too! :)

I'm going to try Ventrilo tonight. Teamspeak is good, but they *monitor* your server if you run one, and I ain't havin' that ;)

I currently use ventrillo myself. I have also tried teamspeak, but I still like Ventrillo better.

Ventrilo does not limit you to 8 users.

It is free provided it is a personal Ventrilo server.

Teamspeak is free for personal use and corporate use.

I like the fact you can have client + server in one. Very useful probably low footprint too.

I've used Roger Wilco, Teamspeak and Ventrilo.

My favorite is Ventrilo.
It seems the smallest, with the least bloat and takes the least memory.

I dont see why a voice program has to be some bloatware like teamspeak. Ventrilo is just smaller and I see no reason for it to be bigger or take up more mem.

Teamspeak is not free for corporate use, they have a licensing fee structure that differs depending on your use. See Their FAQ for details :)

I have no idea about Ventrillo, but I'll check it out tonight.
