I hope this not a re-post

Ripped from my favorite technical bargains site:

"...Onecall has the THX certified Tivo Series 3 HD DVR for only $599.97, $12.92 3 day shipping. Tax in ID, WA, WV. Exp 1/23

Lifetime transfers end 1/31. New unit must be purchased by then. 3/2 deadline for activation. Service fee extra for new users...."

I see $709.99 also and, if I recall correctly, that lifetime transfer costs $199.

Where do you see that lifetime transfers only last till the end of the month? Please link. I was hoping to hold off until the summer.

"TiVo® Series3? HD DVR purchase required by 1/31/2007 and activation of the DVR is required by 03/02/2007."

Unless, of course, they extend it.

I don't mean to crap in the thread, but this transfer fee business is total BS! I bought a LT, I should be able to use it on any one TIVO unit. I paid for the service, not the unit.

per the life time agreement it's for the life of the box, not your lifetime.

I think this deal may be expired. Previously it showed up as 709 (on Friday) too, but once in the cart it became $599 - I received mine today

Correct, I remember when I got my parents a Tivo for x-mas two years back. It specifically and clearly stated that lifetime means for the life of the unit.

I agree the fee is complete BS, but unless you bought a Series 1 and still have the grandfather clause you KNEW (or should have) that the Lifetime service you purchased was ONLY on the box you bought. If the box died you lost the lifetime. That's been clear in the TIVO terms since 2001 when I bought my first Tivo and Lifetime.

I do have a Series 1. And now that I think about it, I've already changed it out once because I had my Tivo die on me. Time to check my account. Maybe I'm complaining about nothing.

remember that only the very first series 1 has the clause...something about purchasing lifetime sub before a certain date...

Keep in mind that, according to TIVO, you'll still be able to add the series 3 for $6.95/mo if you have active existing boxes. (I have two with Lifetime & another TIVO where I'm paying $6.95/mo.)

IMHO the $199 upgrade fee is a bit stiff to give up Lifetime on another box, even if they let you keep that one active for 12 months.

For me, I'll let them work the kinks out & fine tune the Series 3, then I'll get one when the price drops & I have access to a good amount of HD programming. One of the things I use a LOT on my existing boxes is the Tivo-to-Go feature & the Series 3 doesn't yet support it. The part I use the most is downloading 'keeper' recordings to my PC so I can archive them or burn them to DVD - Windows Media Player will play them like an MPEG file with the proper codec.

My buddy couldn't wait & paid $800 for his plus the $199 for the lifetime upgrade - yikes! He still doesn't have it hooked up, his cable company wouldn't let him pick up the cable cards for HD programming, they require he set up an appointment (loonnng wait) for a tech to come out & install them ...

Hope this helps someone ...
