Hot evga 8800GT.

My 8800GT is running a little over 90 C @ 100% fan speed in COD. A little on the noisy side and still some high temps. It idles in windows at 67 C or so.

So, i figured I would look into some cooling alternatives. From what I have read the Arctic Cooling accelero s1 would be a decent option and it's passive. Could always add a fan to it. Also saw alot of people talk about the Zalman VF1000.

Only con I've read about with the Accelero is the install. Some say it's easy but alot say it's not??????

Anyone have any other opinions?

Have you cleaned it? Those thin cards collect dust and hairs fast.

I've known a few people with that card and it does run hot.

It is clean.

yh - can you tell me what all is needed for the install? Some of the reading I have done mentioned people using some kind of arctic paste/cement (not AS5) as well as AS5. I just want to make sure I order everything I need and get it all done.

90C at 100% fan speed is not right. How's the air flow in your case? What's the ambient temperatures?

Consider taking off your heatsink and reapplying the TIM and installing the heatsink on again. If it was badly done, that's why your temperatures are so high.

Air flow is fine. It's a p182 case with a good bit of room. Most wires are hidden behind mobo so it's no rats nest. Ambient in my PC room is ~75F or so. It may get a bit warmer in the heat of the day which is when I tested the 100% fan speed.
I'd like to get an aftermarket at this point. Just need to decide exactly which one and what all I need to do.

The Accelero itself is easy to install -- it's the ramsinks that are somewhat tricky. You have to be very careful to clean the RAM thoroughly, and preheat the ramsinks a bit to soften the adhesive. You can avoid the hassle by just mixing thermal goo and a drop of superglue, though.

If it were me I would take of the HS assembly and re-seat checking that is sits properly with some new TIM.

Are you sure the fan is running at 100%, did you take the case off and look at it. I have the same card and it runs 50-54c at idle and 60-67 while gaming. I have the fan speed set at 80%, I'm goiong to start turning it to 100% when I'm gaming. How did you check to see if you had no dust bunnies and did u blow air through it?

I just replaced the mobo last week so I haven't puit the side case on. I can see it clearly. I use evga precision to normally run it at 60%. I can just barely hear it. i made another profile for 100% and you can hear it ramp up so I know it's changing.

It's pretty easy

1) Take off old heatsink and wip the memory and GPU clean with alcohol

2) Stick the ramsinks on the memory. Hold them down tight with your thumb for about 10 seconds If you dont think they're sticking warm them up a tad with a blow dryer

3) Repeat with the VRMs

4) Thermal paste on GPU and stick the card on top of the accelero

5) Bolt it down loosely

6) Put on the little clips to hold up the far side of the cooler. More detailed instructions are included

7) Tighten screws, mount a fan or two and GTG

Try modding your card a bit. The metal shroud over the HSF is just keeping the air in, and if you don't feel that the stock fan can cool it switch it out for an 80mm fan or a 92mm fan. I did that with mine, idle went from 55 to 50 and full load, in Furmark, went from 95 to 85.

if the thing ever ran cool, then it's probably the tim... i had the same situation with some 8800gts's... the goop on the gpu had gone crunchy... be careful if u pull the hsf off the thing, since it may have pads for the memory that you will want to reuse...

I've had four different 8800GT/9800GT 65nm cards and they all ran pretty toasty with the stock cooler and good case cooling.

I have two right now, one with a VF900 and the other with a Thermaltake ND1. Both hit about 75C under full load. Not bad, but if you want them to run cooler you have to spend some bucks on an HR-03 GT or something comparable.

Not really worth it for an 8800GT these days, I picked up the last one on this forum for $65 shipped with the VF900. I just couldn't see the sense in spending $50 on a gpu cooler for it, when something like a HD 4830 runs about $75 and is a little bit faster and runs super cool with the stock heatsink.

Heck, I game at 1280 x 1024 and just downgraded from a 8800GT to a 9600GT. Not much difference in performance, but a huge difference in cooling. Used an Asus Glaciator heatsink I had laying around, put it at 45% fan speed and you can't even hear it. Load temps are only 60C overclocked, and I don't even notice any loss in gaming framerates. If I put the Thermaltake ND1 on it (which is way quieter than the VF900), I bet it wouldn't even break 50C.

Sorry to ramble on, with that being said I would just buy the Thermaltake ND1 for it. It's only $24 shipped at 3BTech. It looks really cool, has cooling for the ram, vents air outside the case and is really quiet. That's the most I would invest on an 8800GT.
