Hey all, I was at OD this afternoon and noticed they have marked down most of there Compaq' and HP PCs up to 900Mhz (Duron, Anthlon and Celerons). I also noticed that the laptops prices had fallen about 100-150. I know allisolm had gotten a good deal last week. These may not have been a fluke. I think the store she visited is just being more aggressive. They had actually made hand written signs and had case stacks of the pc's with signage all over them. I will try to get some skus and specs tomorrow and post them asap. If I were you guys, I would check out your local OD daily in case they decide to drop the bottom out and dump them quick. I hate reading about some deal here and then go out and all the merchandise is gone.

As an OD employee, I can tell you that both Compaq and Hp are rolling out their new model computers. Depending on which store you visit, you will see some that aggressivley try to get rid of their discontinued models, especially display models. Our store manager tries to get these models blown out before the price drops too much and we lose even more on them. Once a computer hits clearance, most times it is sold under cost. The managers or puter salesmen don't want to see this happen as it hurts their bonus..

Just my .02 cents.

So Carapace, It is the manager discretion how low to markdown clearance items? We all have been wondering if markdown prices are controlled at the store level or nationally. Eventually, I have seen prices posted here at the OD stores I shop. Usually I get there a day late. I have now gotten into the habit at stopping at 2 stores a day on the way home from work so I don't miss anything.

i think it depends, because the mgrs never know about deals, but also the prices between the ods here lately have started varying alarmingly different...
very good points, but why not add to allisolm's thread?
oh well, i found out that the .88 drop every two weeks in most cases--the v44500 agp is back up to $149.88 :(
this jibes with my recent purchase of the garmin @ $99.88 and goin back to return it and finding it was now $19.88...

Zwingle,

Thanks for letting us know about the deal, but it looks like you could afford about a 3 month break.

I found a pretty good deal at the local OD yesterday, an eMachine Celeron 600 machine w/ 32MB of RAM and a 15GB drive for $299. Almost bought it, but decided I value my marriage too much to buy another $100+ item just because it was a good deal. I did buy a couple of nice radio/alarm clocks for $2.88 apiece and a personal humidifier for $.88. They also had a Daewoo 19" TV/VCR combo for $100, which I thought was a steal, but still passed up.

Why take a 3 month break?
As long as the wife keeps making the money....I will keep spending it.

And I like to keep the forums informed.....

Zwingle,

Pricing on clearance items can depend on the store managers attitude about clearance items. I work for one of the smallest OD's west of the Mississippi, so for us its a different story than others. If we got old product taking up room for the new, than you can see we would lose even more profit. The manager can only do so much though. On most computers, my manager will take an additional $50 to $100 off clearance display computers. Right now he's got that clearance e-machines display at $325.88 sitting on top of a $75 mail in rebate. Use the AOL rebate on top of that and you got what ammounts to a nice print server at a cost lower than most. As for upcoming deals, it really depends on the market. I was on a call with our DM and he stated that in Thursdays Oregonian that there will be some awesome deals on clearance computers. He made it sound as if it would only be the Portland market stores though. I am still a little unclear on what he meant.

Hope this helps.
