First of all, for the newbies, b&m=brick and mortar.

Ok, heres the good stuff- a 19" viewsonic .27 monitor for $300 after mail in rebate. They also have a 1ghz DDR thunderbird system and a 1.2 ghz ddr thunderbird system. I wasn't expecting to see DDR systems in B&M shops for quite some time... I would assume these are running on the amd 760 chipset. Both seem to be pretty reasonably priced, $1749 for:

Micron computer
1 ghz tbird
128 mb ddr 200 Mhz
40 gb hard drive
12x max dvd drive
8x max cd-rw drive
56gay modem
16 mb tnt2
crappy speakers
Good 17" trinitron micron monitor

Micron Pc
$2149 for:
1.2 ghz tbird
128 mb ddr 200 Mhz
60 gb hard drive
12x max dvd drive
12x max cdrw
56g modem
slightly better speakers
32 mb tnt2 vid card
sound blaster live! sound card
17" color monitor

Hmmm I would have to say the cheaper one is a better deal as it comes with a trinitron monitor. On either system your probably going to want to upgrade the video card and speakers.

128 mb pc133 PNY ram for $100.

Letsee.. a western digital 40 gb 7200 rpm for $170.. if someone can get a shop with a rebate on this drive then get them to pricematch it.. could be very hot..

If your building a cheap system you can get 2 pieces of 32 mb ram for $20.. $20 for 64 mb is pretty good even if it is pc100 and generic. But you gotta wait for $30 in instant rebates, so its $50 in the store.

Someone look into that hard drive and see if any other b&m places have it with a rebate.

just a note about that viewsonic rebate, you most likely will have to go through hell and back to get it, like I did. Its from that infamous POS rebate house in arizona. you are warned.

Note about the 32 meg memory modules, in another thread someone claims its Kingston brand and on the rebate form at the bestbuy website it says only 1 rebate per household so don't plan on getting a second $15.00 rebate if you get two modules.:Q

Hmmmm... why do oem's continue to use Tnt2's and in some cases even m64's in their high-end products? A geforce2mx can't be more than 70 bucks when bought in bulk and will give you 2x the graphics performance...

Yes, the Kingston 32 mb sticks have a 1 per household limit for the rebate. It's printed right on the rebate from the register however, I got two and my neighbor got one of them :)

$18.98 for two sticks (64) isn't bad.

can we pricematch bestbuy.com with online vendors like buy.com or onvia.com? Also, can we pricematch the BestBuy B&M with online vendors? If yes, then there are some really good deals on cases and powersupplies, and maybe other items as well. does anyone know if its possible? thx in advance.

Best Buy B&Ms only price match in other, local B&Ms. At least that's the way it is here in Waco, TX.

man, they should start putting Geforce2 MX's in these machines at least!

The only retail computer that i know which has a decent card in it is the Sony VAIO P3-866 computer which has a MX video card in it.

I played around with one of the Athlon T-Bird 1 GHz the other week, which had a M64 card in it, and it basically sucked in 800x600 and higher...

I'm an employee of Best Buy. Very recently we started pricematching online stores. Now you can use the liberal return policy of Best Buy, plus get decent prices.

They put in tnt2s because high-end does not always = high-end gaming. Most people who buy these systems won't use them to play q3/ut at high resolutions and won't know the diffirence, but the price of the comp will be lower.

BestBuy employee,

Could you just answer a couple of questions. Is that price match policy company wide? Also, what are the limitations?

Thanks

I'm also in the Chicago area and the Best Buys here WILL pricematch online sites. Almost all policies are company wide, so I suggest you try your local Best Buy. Ask to speak with the sales manager if a Product Specialist, Senior, or Supervisor tells you that you can't.
