HOT DEAL take your Xbox and use it as a PC for free!

I dont undrestand why the last thread got locked. As far as i am concerned getting more use out of hardware you own for free is a hot deal. It is not illegal as you can do whatever you want with your console as long as your not using illegal software or hitting someone over the head with it. I am not supporting using illegal games or anything illegal at all only the use of your gaming computer as a more complete TV media machine.
Note: please keep discussion of illegally copied games out expecially since its irrelevant

Xbox - Linux

It seems you can also run Linux on your PS2, though the ps2 hardware is much less powerful

Ps2 - Linux

There was talk of pirating games, apps, and movies. That is why it was probably locked. Now you will be on vacation 🙁.

This will get locked also....if the mods lock a thread, you just have to respect their decision.......

let me know when you find some pirated linux apps, lol

I dont care about copying games i am only interested in being able to use my xbox as a media box. I dont see threads being locked when people talk about DIVX or MP3's on a regular pc!

BTW, the site states:

Small FAQ
Can I still play games and watch DVDs after installing Linux?

Yes.

Can I still store pirated games on the F: drive?

No

CanÂ?t you change it so that drive F: with my pirated games doesnÂ?t get overwritten?

No. And by the way, this is not a Linux issue; the BIOS that supports the F: drive doesnÂ?t support any partitioning of the additional space.

So no pirating issues.

EVEN without pirating, this ain't no hot deal. Hot deals are supposed to be for good prices, not hacking your console. Anyways, with the price of components now, you can build a better system for the cost of an Xbox and the mod-chip.

I dont think its cheaper to build a system, if you have to buy all the parts and monitor and you can even find it for under 200 it will be total crap. Plus you will be able to play games with all your monkey friends that are not too computer savvy

The DMCA conflicts here with fair use laws and unfortunately DMCA supercedes fair use so it is illegal to the fullest extent and hence the locking of the threads. The reason why the DMCA comes into it is that this involves circumventing mechanisms for preventing copyright infringment. MS can, will, and has litigated sites about this so for the good of AT these threads must be locked.

The main reason your thread was LOCKed was because it was NOT a HOT DEAL.,, If it's not a HOT DEAL it doesn't belong in a HOT DEAL FORUM, very simple is it not? The price for the syetem posted on your previous thread is $199 and everyone knows that's the retail price of the system , if you can get a link for say $150 then it could consider a hot deal. Also, you do need other add-ons like Keyboard and mouse and perhap other things, which would add to the total cost. By the way, The X-box is dying, there's hardly any good games for it, you know Microsoft will kill it soon cause its losing lots of money in this department.

For $300 you can build a pretty good Lunix box, cause you don't need to buy a monitor you can just use your TV. the CPU in the Xbox is 733mhz so I'm sure I can get a better CPU than that.

NOw PS2 on the other hand has lots of great games and lots more comming, even Gamecube has more good games than the X-box.

ACTUALLY.... XBOX just overtook gamecube sales. Only place it is really suffering is in Japan where it probably sells 1 every year or so (I'm exaggerating, gut their sales a horrid in Japan). As far as games are concerned and Microsoft pulling the XBOX, no such luck buddy. In fact, Microsoft just acquired Rare and put more money into it's entertainment division. As far as hot deals go, yea this isn't really that great unless you already have an xbox and want to put linux on it, but then again xbox-linux has been around the scene for a while. It's a novel idea and a great project. If you're interested in making the xbox into a PVR as well as a gaming console and dvd/cd player, I believe someone is attempting to develop support for the WinTV PVR USB. That won't be for a while, if ever... Anyway, XBOX isn't dying. There are many games slated for release in 2003. Some noteable games: StarCraft: Ghost, Halo 2, Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball 😀

It's also really easy to hookup a keyboard and mouse to the XBOX, just buy a breakaway cable for the xbox controller and splice it with a regular USB cable, you can use the other two ends and hook up the xbox controller to your computer.. hrm.. I'm going to have to take back what I said about this not being a hot deal.

For $200 MSRP + $45 Modchip + $5 Break-Away Cable + $5 USB HUB = $255 (You can most likely get it for cheaper), you get:

1 XBOX Console
2 XBOX Games
1 XBOX Controller
1 PC Compatible Gamepad (Drivers at http://codeunderground.com)
1 Linux Capable PC with a decent processor and video card

The modifications you can make to the XBOX are abundant.. I added some LEDs to my XBOX to let me know when the HDD was being accessed. All in all, the XBOX isn't a bad investment.

I don't agree. Several reasons: One, xbox does NOT come with a display. So its not really fair to include a monitor when you are talking prices between xbox and computer.
2nd: I bought a abit KG7 motherboard for $50ish shipped just a couple months ago, and a 1600XP+ for $50ish shipped as well. For $100 I have a basic computer. Throw in a cheap case at any computer show (computer shows are really good to get cases, but not a ton else, mainly because they are heavy and shipping is expensive) for $35. You are up to $135 and you already have most of a computer. Get a $10 mouse and a $10 keyboard each having $10 rebates (compusa does this occasionally) and you have input devices for basically free. Get 256 megs 2100 DDR for $35. We are up to $180 now. The only thing missing is a hard drive. Pick up one for $60 (probably a 40 or 60 gig) and you are only at $240. Not very much above the xbox. Its possible to get it slightly lower even if you reduce the size of the hdd for example.

And there's the lindows computer from walmart for $200. Depending on what you are doing, that may be a far better deal than an xbox. (not if you are going to seriously game though)

Oh PLEASE. The mods let the thread about pirating the leaked alpha of Doom III run it's full course...complete with links and instructions to d/l it off of IRC and Newsgroups. Why? Because they were intereted in warezing it as well. I guess you just have to get used to the hypocrisy if you want to stay here.

So let me recalculate for you:
Abit KG7 $55 (we'll ignore shipping, assume you got a deal Price: Essencompu)
1600XP+ $54 (Newegg)
Case: $35 (Drove out and got one: 30 Minutes)
Keyboard/Mouse: Free (scrounged for a deal, 30 Minutes + MIR for $10)
256MB DDR: $35 (another deal, 30 minutes + MIR for $25
HD: $60
DVD-ROM: $40
NIC: $10
GF3 comparable graphics: $65
--------------------------------------
Total: $384 ($339 after MIR) and at least 2 hours of time (after assembly)

Or just waltz down to Hollywood video and pick up an Xbox for $150

Price comparable? I don't think so. Now, your system has gobs more storage, processor power, and RAM, but if we strip that away, you still don't get much under $300 for comparable functionality as an Xbox. It also ends up bigger, involving deal scrounging (ok, some of us do that for fun...), driving about, and assembly. My point is, the Xbox is still pretty durned cheap for what you get. Whether you WANT that, is another matter entirely.

Of course you're failing to mention that you'll be using that nice Linux Xbox with a horrid TV for a display unless you get build yourself or buy some sort of VGA adapter. Only a few days ago was true VGA hacked on the Xbox and the details of how to do it are not public yet.

And since when is Hollywood video selling Xbox's for $150?

One, xbox does NOT come with a display. So its not really fair to include a monitor when you are talking prices between xbox and computer.

I think the point is you do not need a monitor, just your good old TV. So yes it is cheaper and you can play Splinter Cell on it, try that with your box.

You forgot to mention how you grease up your PS2 before you plook it. Nothing says "FANBOY" more than retarded comments like this.:|

Anyways, this isn't a HOT DEAL, so why don't you post it over in GENERAL HARDWARE or OFF-TOPIC and quit being a whiner about it getting booted from here?

I think this has to do more with Modding the XBOX which I don't think your supposed to do according to the license agreement with purchasing an XBOX....or does this Linux distro actually mod it at all?...or just add to it.?

This is not a hot deal. It may be cool.. but its not a hot deal... a hot deal is a certain product for a price that is less than you can normally get it. We dont need people coming in here throwing around their own definition of hot. By y our definition we should start seeing al sorts of threads on performance modifiactions on everything from computers to cars, to maxi pads

HOT DEAL: Screw some wheels onto your toaster, Mod your legs by first cutting off your feet and planning your bones down so they perfectly fit the slots, then add a small gas motor from a lawnmoer and youve got a cheap alternative toa segway 😛

I mean seriously now... modding is not a hot deal......
