Get a load of this:

A Nikon Coolpix 990, packaged with a Nikon coffee-table book of photography of your choice, for $649, direct from Nikon. I am TRYING to avoid buying this . . .

EDIT - as noted below, this IS a refurb - I did not know at the time I posted. Still potentially a very good deal, though . . .

Why do you think so? The Nikon Mall normally clearly indicates when they are selling refurbs, and this one says nothing to that effect.

Huh? I still see nothing on its face that indicates this is a refurb. If I had the scratch for the camera I would call Nikon to find out, but, again, it appears to be a new camera. As I said above, they normally clearly indicate that a product is reconditioned, and I see no such language on the page.

The Nikon 990 might be in the Nikon Mall at a reduced price, because later this month, the new Nikon 995 will be hitting store shelves. I believe that it is a replacement, with a few more advanced features (more zoom, pop-up flash, etc) and also with a list price of $100 less ($999 list for 990 vs. $899 list for the 995) The 990 is a great camera... I'm just waiting for Nikon to come out with an more affordable digital SLR so I can use my lenses I have for my current cameras.

This is a great camera that has more features than any other digicams. If you are just looking for a point-and-shoot digicam, this one may not be good for you for the price. However, if you are looking for one more than point-and-shoot, Coolpix990 will not disappoint you. I have been owing this cam for almost a year. I used it to take pics of sunrise, sunset, blooming flowers with macro mode, all the pics are wonderful. I highly recommand this cam if you are photography hobbyist. Well, you may need to consider the cost of extra accessaries like an extra CF card, external light, camera bag, and extra set of batteries, etc. I paid more than $800 just for the camera last year but I am not regretted of paying such price for it coz it worths.

I wonder how many people have bought the camera thinking it was brand new. Pretty misleading if you ask me.

I was messing around to see what the shipping cost is and the following information appeared at checkout:

Michael Shih
38** Carson St.
San Diego CA 92117
phone.. email.. etc..

Does this information belong to any of you? I'll be wary to buy from this place.

I think this is a great value...I recently bought a refurbished Coolpix 950 and it was in perfect condition. Not even a fingerprint on it!

Only difference is the warranty was 90 days instead of 12 months.

Hmmm...maybe since it is discontinued the 990 will come down even lower in price soon.
