UPDATE: I just got mine, and in addition to the card, it comes
with Ulead VideoStudio 4 ("basic/SE" version), Ulead PhotoExpress SE,
and an 8' 4-to-6 pin FireWire cable. The regular version of
VideoStudio retails for $100 by itself (don't know how this
version differs from that one...).

Outpost.com has the Newer Technology PCMCIA firewire
card for laptops for $35, which includes overnight
delivery.

They list both PC and Mac versions, so be sure to pick
the PC version if that's what you want.

The caveot: 1) Newer Technology recently went out of
business, which is why these cards are being cleared
out. They made good quality stuff, but future driver
support is obviously going to be scare or non-existant.
However, this card comes with drivers for Win98 and
Win2000...

Still, for $35 this is a steal. If you need firewire
capability, of course. USB II is about to step up to the
plate, and it will be interesting to see what the ultimate
fallout is...

I figure for $35, I can afford to splurge now and be
splurge again later.

This will be a nice addition to any laptop. Especially since the Predator looks to a be a great portable CDRW that can use Firewire. Fortuneatly my laptop comes with firewire (something sony call i-Link, totally confused me for a while) and I can wait for the deals for the predator. Whoo hoo.

One question (kinda for a friend who is considering this card, she's a got a HP *crap, cough, POS*) will you be able to use the full capabilities of the firewire or will you be limited in some way, for example you have a 10/100 NIC but a 10 hub. I was reading about how 16 bit and 32 bit PCMCIA cards make a difference is that true?

This is a Cardbus card, which is IIRC, a 32 bit standard. So if you don't
have Cardbus support, you're SOL.

What I'm looking for is a nice, cheap IDE to IEE1394 bridge. That way I can
FireWire-ize (<-- technical term) my $99 iomega ZipCD :)

I just got the card last night. Nice deal. It's working fine with Win2K. Thanks for the deal Kwad Guy.

Hey CoreDog2, I have FireWire-ized my IOMega CD-RW and it's been working great. I bought the ADS Pyro 1394 FireWire Drive Bay Kit which contained the drive bay with the IDE-Firewire bridge as well as a PCI FireWire Card. Got it from Buy.com with a $30 off $150 coupon ($160-$30 coupon = $130).

Here's a link:
