I don't know if this is available in all areas, but I recently got an e-mail from Earthlink stating they are testing out a new home networking scheme and need beta testers. Here's the deal:

1)You sign up to be a beta tester
2)You will then pay a fee of $100 for all the equipment they will send you
3)After the beta process is complete, they will give you 2 months free of DSL

I'm pretty sure after the beta proces is complete, you do get to keep all the equipment they send you since they say you get all the equipment at a discounted price or something like that. Anyway, here is the link

Sorry if this has been posted before or if there is some term in the contract I missed, I didn't read it too thorughly.

*fixed link*

you have to pay $100 to be a beta tester? hopefully the equiptment they send is made out of gold because thats crazy.

The link was dead so I have no idea if this deal is worth looking into.

Well keep in mind your getting 2 months free of DSL after the testing is complete which is already $80-$100 off your bill depending on where you live.

So you pay $100, then they give you back $80? So you end up paying them to test THEIR hardware? LOL

They let you keep the equipment which is worth "$400". I don't see what's so funny, if you have earthlink dsl your essentially getting the equipment for 20 bucks. Seems pretty good to me.

What are the BENEFITS of completing the Beta Program?

Two FREE months of EarthLink DSL ? up to a $99 value!
Home networking equipment ? a retail value of up to $400 for the discounted price of $99!
Top-notch technical support for the duration of the Beta Program by a dedicated Beta Program Support Team!

A much simpler solution to DSL sharing is to install a later version of NTS Enternet which supports Microsoft ICS. Version 1.31 supplied by Earthlink does not support ICS. Versions 1.34 and later do. I have been using 1.4 for several months and it works great with my 4 computer network.

ICS comes with Win98 - I'm not sure which other systems support ICS.

Looks like you already have to be signed up for this. Says you have to answer two surveys, one on December the 11th.

I thought about doing this, but I already have $100 (full price) worth of equipment that allows me to route the DSL connection to 7 computers. So I will pass on the inflated $400 software.

I guess Earthlink wants to offer a DSL router package in a one stop shop, earthlink supported hardware solution. This is for the, duh what is dat dare thingy crowd.

Damn, I didn't qualify anyways... I kept changing the ansewrs but I wasn't sure, whether or not I had to be smarter or stupider about the thing, I chose smarter, and then made myself more and more stupid, but I wasn't going to degrade myself to the point of stupidity just for $400 of stuff... :)

maybe next time.
