HOT DEAL for ATT Wireless NEW GSM network (mLife and mMode)

Greetings,

I just got a new cell phone from ATT Wireless, and the deal is UNREAL. I got it here in Kansas City, one of the first markets for the GSM network. The store is 1 block from Sprint's Headquarters as well, and I think it plays into the deal.

The deal:

$59.99 for UNLIMITED COAST-COAST MINUTES (as GSM is rolled out). Also, ATT Wireless has a new roaming agreement going into effect with Cingular shortly, and you will get FULL ACCESS to Cingular network with NO ROAMING FEES. The unlimited plan is free long distance, all features (3-way, etc...) and 2 MB of data.

I called in to Customer Service after I signed up to make sure it was real, and the rep fell out of their chair (not really) and said that it is all unlimited and they have never seen this before.

I would think that as long as you will live with a KC Phone number, everyone should be able to get this, but be warned - look at the GSM coverage map. There is not a lot yet as they are rolling it out now. 66223 is the zip just for you to see.

Have fun!!

Peter

That's pretty good. So... what phone did you get with it? Any cool ones with color screens like the new Sony Ericsson's?

Yes, the reason they are so aggressive here in KC is Sprint's HQ. In fact, the AT&T Sales office is about a block from their world HQ campus - talk about ballsey.

On the phones, the coolest are the Siemens phones!! Color screens, etc.. There are some motorola, Nokia, and a few Ericson phones.. No Sony's I saw.Plug in the zip 66223 at att wireless website ( Here ).

Again, if you can live with a KC phone number and you are in another covered market, since all LD is covered, should be a great deal. I DO know that they will be building out the GSM to cover the existing TDMA markets.

Just FYI...

As phones go, Sony = Ericsson = Sony/Ericsson

I'm guessing the phone that foggy is asking about is the Sony/Ericsson T68 - ie. the latest 'gotta-have-it' phone. Check it here.

Right now it is only available in the states through At&T's mLife plan. Did you see it offered with your deal?

Damn that's almost enough for me to breach my VoiceStream Wireless 1 year contract and switch over to AT&T just for the UNLIMITED minutes, if I kill my land line phone that would save me $30/month just use my cell phone for ALL my calls assuming I get cable internet.

Is/will this be available in Portland, Oregon?
How long of a contract is required (if any)?

AT&T GSM to use Cingular for roaming calls? As if Cingular wasn't already crowded enough with their system busy's and stuff =\

ATT has nothing close to that deal here in Florida where GSM and mMode are available.
Same crappy rates as usual, plus now all require a 2 year service contract.
I guess they kept losing so many customers, they now make you sign away 2 years.
Be honest, if it was good, no service contract would be needed. People would want to stay. But they all do this.

The best thing about the newest 3Ghz technology is internet connection speeds when phone is laptop connected.
Currently, we are stuck with speeds of around 14k to 19k.
3GHz will bump this up to around 112k.
Now what sucks with ATT is they are still using the amount of data transfered to determine billing.
What good are faster downloads when they charge by how much you download? ChaChing for ATT!
Sprint still has them beat in this area, as data use is $5 a month extra, and comes off your minutes.
So if you have 4000 minutes for $39.95, connecting a laptop and browsing the internet for 60 minutes
while traveling will not cost you anything extra (besides $5). ATT charges $12.49 for the 2 MB plan,
then $10.24 for each meg after that. Even with 56k speeds, it is easy to transfer 4 to 8 megs in 60 minutes.

sounds like att is trying to unseat sprint as hassle free coast to coast coverage.
sprint coverage is shaddy in certain area, but their condition are pretty flexible
just got a 50 dollar credit for renewing with sprint and paid for a mot v120, phone

if you've been an ATT customer for more than 12 months you may qualify for up to $150 off one of those phones 🙂

In DFW, AT&T's mMode has launched (GSM)
The rates are decent, but they don't include any roaming (not even to other AT&T GSM markets):
19.99 gets you 60 minutes, $39.99 gets you 500 minutes, and $60 gets you 900 minutes. Try the zip code 75225 to see these rates.

If you click specials, it will give you the deals with a contract:
For GSM, you get free LD on plans $39/month and above with a 1 or 2 year contract. With a 1 year, you get 3000 night minutes (like anybody could use those!). For a 2 year, you get unlimited n+w and a waived $36 activation fee. The 1 year contract would appear to be a better deal, because you get to upgrade your phone at a discount after one year, rather than waiting 2. There will be some cool new phones in the next year, the Nokia 6590 (like the 8390 that is out now, plus GSM 850 (which will be used in the USA) and an FM radio), and the Nokia 7210 (triband (world), color phone - will be real expensive I bet though). Cell phone technology is getting better & smaller all the time.

<< if you've been an ATT customer for more than 12 months you may qualify for up to $150 off one of those phones 🙂 >>

Sweet! 😀

I just got off the phone with a salesperson from Wireless Retail around KC. It looks like the unlimited GSM minutes are $50 without long distance, and $55 with nationwide LD. However, you cannot originate calls outside of the KC metro area. In otherwords, roaming is not included.

That kills this deal for me.

Hopefully they will have better plans sometime soon, and stop SIM locking their phones. The new Siemens s46? phone is supposed to have both TDMA and GSM, to allow AT&T customers to transistion from the two networks. The plan that is rumored is 450 minutes and xxx nights/weekends for $59/mo. Probably w/ 1MB data, which is weak.

So if you can stand the poor customer service, dropped calls, and sh*tty, lackluster phones, Sprint PCS is still the best deal.

Misman,

I am in Florida and I am adding another line to my account on this GSM service. My question for you is did AT&T offer you free roaming anywhere on their GSM network or do you only have toll free to all 50 states. There is a difference as I could care less if I have a Kansas number as 90% of my calls are long distance anyway and it is easy for me to point a toll free number to my phone but if they whack me for roaming it would defeat the deal. It is my interpretation that the Introductory deal you are on is only for local access. If you could post a reply quickly I would appreciate it as I am picking up my phone tomorrow. I bought the Siemens Gsm/TDMA phone. It is one awesome phone as it enables one to pick up on any TDMA or GSM frequency anywhere in the world. It is the only multi band phone made at this time. I only held it when in AT&T store but will report back on call quality once I have it. I currently use the Motorola V60 but the global roaming plus data capabilities sold me on this phone. AT&T offered me $100 off the $199 price with only one call to customer service so if anyone else is interested just call and tell AT&T how valuable of a customer you are.

whoa.........sweet. I just looked at the coverage map, and it looks like it hits the detroit/Troy/Ann Arbor area, so that's good for me....plus, I'm a 12+ month customer, so I'll get a discount according to someone that posted. I've been eyeing the Sony Ericsson T68 for a while now, since one of my friend's already has one.......but will they carry the T68i as well?

I'll be dropping by my local AT&T store tomorrow, looks like. Thanks for reminding me MISMan!

Does anyone have a foundation account number for GSM AT&T? I currently work for Albertsons and albertsons doesn't have a GSM foundation account set up with ATT. Anyone have this info?

I looked the deal up today at work because I couldn't believe it myself! Its an introductory business plan, I don't know how long the introductory period will be. I only found it in KC but I really didn't look around too hard. As far as MISMan suggesting that you could get the phone and "live w/ a KC number" you would need to have a KC billing/user address too.

TW1164,

I don't think the billing address is important as I already have lines registered in different geographic regions all billed to the same corporate headquarters in FL. The worst case scenario would be to get a Mailbox for a month then change billing address. If AT&T argued with me I would just say Verizon would be happy to take all my lines and they don't care where I am as long as I pay my bill. That comment would probably stop the argument in it's tracks. The only reason these wireless companies have restricted daytime minutes in the past is because of the bandwidth used at peak times. As AT&T builds out their GSM network they have tons of bandwidth with little users sharing it. Long distance now is just a comodity and these networks are working quickly to get all their roaming agreements in place. AT&T is only beginning to build out their 2G GSM network. Once in place it will become 3G with data throughput exceeding several mbs per second...faster than most people receive DSL or Cable internet now. If I remember correctly it only takes about 20kb of bandwith to carry a voice call with GSM compression, so if you calculate that into the equation, it makes it easy to see that voice calls in the future will have little effect on bandwidth at all. I think most wireless and land line carriers are looking for about $50 per line and the usage is not material. This is evidenced in MCI's new Neighborhood program that is $49.99 for unlimited calling and it includes local dial tone. I would say within one to two years all plans will be flat rate except for maybe low user plans which are not very profitable now because of the costs of billing.

Craigg,
I should have phrased as "billing and or user address". You're right in saying that its possible to have phones in different areas of the country with the bill(s) going to the same billing address. There are two levels to an account with AT&T user and account(billing). At least one of those two "levels" would need to be in an eligible area for the plan.

Did you people read my post?

Apparently, you WILL be charged roaming if you make LD calls outside of the KC metro area. Roaming rates are not cheap! Unlimited calls but paying $0.60 a minute per call defeats the purpose!!
