Ok, just got my new sexy Canon Rebel XT. The sad thing is I ordered it over a month ago, but becuase of my patience and JulesMaximus I got a kick ass deal. I think I might be a little paranoid though...

Reading over at dpreview, alot of focus issues with the XT. I dunno if its the camera, the lens, or user error  I'm banking on user error as I have literally only spent an hour with the camera. Coming for a P&S digital...the SLR is a very different experience. In an hour or so walking around my yard I snapped just over 200 pictures...only 20-30 are worth even saving to my hard drive.

Ive got a book dartworth rec. "Understanding Exposure" that I need to dive into...glanced through it and seems very informative and will help my inexperience I think.

First some humble gloating, then the PICs! ;)

Even though I had to wait a month to get it, I got:

Canon Rebel XT(black body)
Canon 28-135 IS USM
Canon Lens Hood
Canon neut density filter
Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB CF
Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB CF
Sandisk 2 GB CF
Canon carrying case

All for just under $1000....hot damn! :D

Ok, now the pics....all resized to 800 x 533

I picked up the 28-135 IS locally from JulesMaximus for really cheap and he threw in the lens hood and neut density filter. Dell provided me with the rest, except for the case. I already had a good deal on the body, but when dell fvcks up, they apologize with concession coupons and partial refunds. ;)

Damn sweet deal you got there! I've been considering the 28-135 for some time, but have heard some reports that it's kinda soft... Those Ultra II cards are sweet on the XT! I have a 300D, but a programmer at work got the XT... He can shoot forever on burst mode with that thing and my 1GB ultra II.

I think a lot of the people on Dpreview that are getting bad shots with their XT are people that aren't shooting with very good technique. Whatever you do, hurry up and start on Understanding Exposure! It's a quick read, and that book gives you a lot of good tips and techniques. I have read through it 3 times myself, and passed it on to a few different friends who have also gotten a lot out of it.

As far as the pics you posted go, they aren't bad considering you had the cam for an hour. Most of the issues I see are lighting... There's a lot of funny lighting, which you will get better with as you shoot more... A big help is an external flash for fill-in. I have the 420EX and really like it. I think it was about $175 or so. I don't know about the XT, but the 300D's flash is almost useless :( One big tip - stay out of P and square modes! Always use Av, Tv, or M, and learn how the different apetures, speeds and ISOs affect each other. If you have any questions, I still consider myself somewhat of a n00b, but PM me and let me know but let me know!

Thanks Jeff, Ive never had an external flash before, but I usualy hate how pictures where a flash was used turn out. The colors seem very un natural to me. I did take all of the pictures in automatic/program automatic mode.

I dunno...I just havn't seen anything that makes me go wow.

That is a sweet lens...I found out very fast 135mm isn't quite far enough. ;)
