I didn't see this listed so I figured I'd post...In sundays paper 8/19 COMPUSA:

30 gig 7200 rpm Maxtor drive for $129.00
- $15.00 instant rebate
- $15.00 mail-in rebate
---------------------
$ 99.00 total

Plus you can get a free Ultra ATA/100 pci adapter card when ya purchase this drive.
$ 49.99
- $50.00 mail in rebate
----------------------
free

not a bad deal in my book....definetly worth checking into.

you could pricematch to staples and use a $20 off $100 coupon, or better yet, get the drive and the card in one order (totalling $165) and use a $30 off $150 coupon...after rebates, it should come out to $85 for both, about $50 if you egay the ata/100 card.

But...isn't 30gigs too little? I paid just a few bucks more for my maxtor 60gig 7200rpm last week...

the pci card rebate is only good for drives that are 40 gig or more.

Well, not as hot as that 40GB Maxtor for $49 (do you think we will ever hear from QPid, blackKat or beerich again?; some people are so gullible to actually believe them) - but still a decent price.

:)

I got the same deal a few months ago at Staples (final about $85 after PM and MIRs). And mine is a 30GB - got the PCI adaptor free also (no stipulation at the time for 40 GB or larger).

30 GB is plenty large - after 6 months mine is less than half filled (unless you are a MP3 maniac).

It was fun reading that thread though, imagine all those people driving down to BB and having the cashiers price check the drives... Not to mention all the people returning the drives today thinking they can PM it. Heehee :D

It's like a virus that spread to other site's forums, they are bashing us, and rightly so. Here are some excerpts:
Finally, this "deal" originated on Banandtech...'nuff said

All of the 3 people that got in on this deal over there and claimed to get the drive or a raincheck are "new members" with only 1 post or so. This was a prank and I was hoping it wouldnt show up here. I think this board has a lot more class than the other.

This hard drive is only ATA/66. And the pci card deal is valid with this hard drive (I have the flyer right in front of me).

OT is laughing at us right now - join the fun.

I think this sets a dangerous precident. I fear we will see many more bogus "deals" instigated by retail store managers with questionable ethics designed to lure bargain hunters into their stores.

"Trust no one."

:D

Skepticism is healthy in reasonable doses.

Finally, back to this deal. $85 with a PM at Staples IS a good deal for this HD. Mine is really fast (even ATA 66 is really no practical difference from ATA 100), quiet and reliable.
