With flagrant disregard for forum etiquette and a sure-fire way of getting Nik's wussy blood boiling, I'm actually going to ask you about repeaters since the networking forum seems to be empty right now.

Do they work with any router? This 3Com one in particular.

Also, who knows of a decent repeater? Reliability is the key, so forget Linksys.

Cheers.

PS: Here's the chick.

Posting a link makes my blood not only wussy, but boiling? Wow. News to me.

Yes, they'll work with any other manufacturer. However, my experience with Linksys, other than me ****** my own ****** up myself, is flawless. I'd reccommend this one. It's what I use along with my WRT54GS.

See, I used the WAG54G previously and it was a freaking nightmare. Reading up on it revealed that many, many people had similar problems (there was even an article in the register). The WRT was also a bit of a pain in the butt, but for other reasons.

The WRT didn't seem to like assigning IPs though DHCP over wireless for some reason, despite using 3 different machines (mac, windows and a linux machine) to try and get it to work. Weird thing is, it worked for maybe 3 months fine, then one day it took a while to assign an IP and it gradually got worse without me touching the thing until it just wouldn't assign one ever. Proper weird.

Anyways, thanks for your help, nik. You're not all bad, although I don't know what you're doing beating off a dead horse.

Well, not every piece of electronic equipment is flawless but I'd have to say that I haven't had to power cycle or reset (factory settings) my WRT54GS since day once which was so long ago I can't remember. I've got one PC connected via CAT5E, one computer connecting via the repeater, and a laptop that roams between the router and the repeater -all using DHCP. The only issue I've seen so far is acquiring an IP through the repeater. I've got some interesting settings but it's only delayed a few seconds, if that. Once an IP attained, the notebook and remote PC have no problems at all. Even moving the notebook from repeater to router is seamless.

I dunno what to tell ya other than resetting factory settings when you see performance degredation. There's really not much you can do unless you're running custom firmware which is a totally different story. I toasted a WRT54G that way, but I had a LOT of fun for a couple months before becoming curious and totally FUBARing the damned thing.

Interestingly, it would assign an IP no problem when a computer was connected via CAT5. I tried hard resets, upgrading and downgrading the firmware... everything. It's no bother now, I flogged it in ebay for a very reasonable price. I still have the WAG I think.

The above 3com router in my opinion is the best router I've ever used: it's fast, the firmware is a dream to use (no rebooting the router after every change) and it's been 100% solid. I picked one up for my work, and also the CEO of the company I work for: everyone's had an awesome time with theirs.

As for using custom firmware: that sounds freaking dangerous for sure. What advantages does it give? My requirements for a router are pretty straightforward, all I want are is a quick connection, secure wireless and logs to see what's going on. Why a router would need customising for just these jobs baffles me. What did the custom firmware do?

I've never had much trouble with Linksys routers myself, but I'm pretty sure I remember that AP will only work with Linksys routers and that this is also the case for most of the commonly available models. I know Hawking makes a repeating
AP that will work with most other brands & can often be found in local stores although I've never used one personally & they are a bit pricy.

I can't speak to custom firmware with anything other than WRT54G/WRT54GS. There's firmware out that gives you WAY more control over the router, enabling quite a few more features. Some of the new control includes being able to set which antenna receives and which transmits as well as adjust the transmit and receive power anywhere from 20mv to 250mv. Keep in mind that the default xmit/rcv power setting is 24mv. :D Setting it to 250mv and running loads of traffic heats it up quite nicely.

I think I still have that custom firmware around here somewhere...

F U OP. I clicked the link without even beginning to read your thread with the hopes of hot chickage. I'd kick your ass right about now if you were nearby.

Man, that chick is too young for me and NSFW (no clothes???)

Plus I'm a leg man, not much as a breast man.
