This is one pretty hot deal. For those who have ever looked at the HG20. Its pretty much a HD20 + 120GB HD instead of a 60 GB and, most importantly, has an optical viewfinder which the HG20 does not.. The HG21 is 799 almost everywhere else. Look at amazon:
<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-AVCHD-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B001DTXK8G">https://www.amazon.com/Cano......ical/dp/B001DTXK8G</a>

Gets pretty good reviews:

Edit:
Sorry i didn't post where it was at before. My bad:

I disagree. Id much rather have a 120GB compared to 32GB in the flash version that sells around the same price. Especially with video that can be huge and the size/weight difference isn't that big of a difference.

Yeah I think it really depends on your usage. I prefer Flash to HDD due to the mechanics (HDD being more prone to failure due to having moving parts & moving the camera around), but I don't know if I've ever actually heard of someone's HDD in their camcorder failing. Of course I don't know too many people with HDD-based cams, but that's beside the point ;)

Having the extra space on the HDD is nice, plus you don't have to copy everything over as soon as the memory card gets full, since you have so much room. I do like Flash a lot because you can swap the cards with your other stuff (camera, audio recorder, etc.), but I actually run an older MiniDV HV20, so I'm not even in the newer digital game yet :D

but you would still have to unload 120GB worth of footage eventually, I like the flash cards best 'cuz it forces you to organize your files someway, right now. But it's hard to argue with 120GB free with the camera. Great price for those in the market for a camera.

The hard drive unit has a SDHC slot so i guess if you want to handle stuff that way then you can. I don't think you understand the difference between the HG (hard drive units) and the HF (flash units). The HF series does not have "removable" flash memory. It has a type of internal SSD type drive. The advantage to this is its a little lighter in weight, takes up a little less space, maybe a little better battery life (that i cant comment on of course since i don't have it yet), and less moving parts as posted above. The advantage to the hard drive is of course space / cost. I guess you can kind of compare this to the difference between a flash based hard drive MP3 dervice and a hard drive based one. Do hard drives fail? Yes of course but i have yet to have one of my hard drive based mp3 devices fail. Has it hapened? Probably. I guess you could argue that people shouldn't buy hard drives in computers anymore because they are less reliable than SSDs but you know that isn't going to happen.

Also i think you might be a little confused on how the AVCHD works. You don't essentially "really" download your video from your hard drive "per se". You can kind of think of it kind of like a file system. So when you plug it into your computer your "interfacing" with the device not really "downloading the video". This allows you to transfer video to your computer very fast because its not limited by real time playback like tapes were but it requires heavy system requirements to be effecient.

Ok anyways i'm about to take a two week vacation to south america and i'd much rather have the many hours of video that 120GB that would afford you then having the chance of running out on a long hike where i won't have access to

What makes the VIXIA HF20 stand out in the category of Flash Memory camcorders is its Dual Memory capability. You can capture video on both the camcorder's internal 32 GB Flash Memory as well as directly to an SDHC Memory Card.

Yes i realize that but you can also record to the HG21 in SDHC. It has a SDHC slot just like the HF20

NP bud. I was actually looking to buy an HG20 and was scouring the web for a deal on one because i'm leaving soon to go on a big escursion of south america. Then i found this deal that has double the hard disk space (though i probably would have been happy enough with 60GB), and optical viewfinder (big plus for me). I also think it might have some more manual settings (though i'm not 100% positive on that one).

I tell you what sucks about video is there doesn't seem to be any good sites / forums for video. There are tons for digital cameras of course but next to nothing for video. Boy would it be nice to have one catering towards video.

Just remember you gotta pull a Kanye before you upload your footage to Youtube...imalet you finish, but you gotta transcode it first :p

A lot of people buy these cameras expecting to just edit out of the box, but because it uses the Bluray AVCHD format, hardly any editors edit it natively, and it's mostly pretty slow for those that do. AVCHD is a recording & playback format, but not a very good editing format, so you gotta convert (transcode) it to an editable format like WMV, AVI, MOV, MP4, etc. My favorite transcoding app is VoltaicHD for $35 (Mac/PC compatible):

Yeah it's pretty lame that quality software like VoltaicHD isn't included in the box. I bet most people are looking to use their shiny new camcorder with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie and are like, what the heck??

Also, the VoltaicHD site says that they'll be adding AVCHD editing soon (basic trim commands), so that will be REALLY nice if you just want to do a quick edit without anything fancy (no transitions or effects) and keep the AVCHD format!

Where's that at? I see that the upgrade will be $9.99 when version 2.0 comes out (if you purchased between July 1st, 2009 and October 2009), but it's saying $34.99 for me, or $39.99 when version 2.0 comes out.

Damn, that sucks I get the same message. I guess I should've checked the board in the last few days...

Anyway, I too had been looking at the HG20 or one of the last generation Canons (HF11) due to their better low light capabilities than this generations'. With the HG21 having an optical viewfinder that sets it above the other ones in my book...

Nice!! VoltaicHD is a great piece of software, I don't know how you'd use an AVCHD camcorder with it, haha.
