Hot!! Buy any DOCSIS standard cable modem (search for Radioshack-free cable modem deal) and lower your monthly to $19. As per FCC regulations, Time Warner give you credit for using your own modem. They have to give you break down of your monthly bill-which is typically $39.99. Currently they charge you $21 for modem. Do your math and you have cable access for $19!!

Sure, you save $10+ a month if you own your own modem, but isn't that the norm? ...I just cancelled an order for @home here in VA....$29.95 a month standard +$10.00 a month modem rental +$10.00 a month since I don't subscribe to cable...I planned on buying a modem and paying the $29.95 a month, but I won't give up my DSS for crappy cable, nor will I pay $10.00 since I am not a cox cable subscriber :)

...guess the 380kps for $19.95 DSL is my best bet until the waive the extra charges on roadrunner...

rav: Are you saying you actually HAVE this deal, or you're just looking at an itemized bill and assuming what the deal might be?

I have time warner road runner access. Please point at the specifics of your post, I would love to see if this is true. Direct us towards this FCC regulation if you get the chance.

Helpless is DSS really that much better than digital cable? From the advertisements on TV, they claim a squirrel fart within a one mile radius of your dish will cause noticeable signal loss. Any truth to that? Even if that ain't so, rain and snow and wind must really suck...it says so right on the digital cable tv commercial.

I called TimeWarner RoadRunner here is Austin about using your own modem. I was told that they only use modems from their "inventory". He said maybe sometime in the future that they might allow it but not right now.

I am in Everett, MA. I have road runner and pay the $39.99 a month, which includes the $10 modem charge, but you have to have one of their other services. I hated their phone service. But, we are allowed to own our own modem, but RR will not service it in any way, which makes troubleshooting difficult. If changes are made in the RR system and the modem that you purchased cannot be upgraded ( don't know what they would do) but you would have to buy another modem or lease one anyway. I personally don't like the $10 a month lease, but I don't want to spend $250 on a modem only to have it work till an upgrade happens. Just another situation of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. My cable connection kicks ass on the DSL in my area also. DSL speeds vary so much because of the distance of the house to the CO, its almost not even worth the money, so be sure you are at least less than 12000 feet from a CO to make it worth it. They cannot touch the speeds of RR in my area. Besides the price, I am lovin RR!! Just my 2cents

I was told by a cable guy that federal regulations will eventually require consumers to buy their own modems. He said he doubted there would be any change in price if you owned your own modem.

But the real question is... what happens if the government stupidly allows AOL to buy out Time Warner???

I fear that day.... I currently use Road Runner, but if AOL has to be my ISP after the merger then screw that, I'm back to modem!!!

And I'm sure all of you that have been keeping up with this whole ordeal will agree there would be no real "choice" even if The Man forces AOL to open up the cable lines to 'competitors' like Earthlink & Juno.... ooh wow, what a "choice" there!

(And no, DSL is not an option for me... not because I can't get it, but because SouthWesternBell SUCKS!!!)

I'm in SoCal and I have Cox@home and pay $39.00, (I have Cox cable) ten of which is for modem rental.

After gitting rid of of Earthlink.net @ $19.95 per month, and the extra phone line @ $12.00 per month, cable modem costs me about $5 bucks a month more for much faster service.

I can get $10 knocked off if I supply my own modem. When cable modem prices get down to <$100 a month I will buy one. An internal cable modem would be great.

I have RR@Cox here in northern Virginia. My current billing is $10 modem rental + $29.95 Internet service. However, if I ever upgrade from limited basic TV cable to basic cable ($12 to $23+), my Internet charges would drop to $19.95. I just don't what that much television ... partly due to the cable modem. :)

Heavy.com anyone?

I see Road Runner dropping it's rental price and providing them free when enough people switch. Then they can raise the price back up for all.

I have ATT Broadband out here in California. They dropped my bill from $49/month to $39/month in the last 6 months. (they got rid of the "you have to be a cable subscriber" clause). I don't have cable TV, I have Dish Network. And I get a great signal even in heavy rain or fog or whatever. Never lost a signal yet. But I have the newer 20" dual feedhorn dish.
