I have this printer and it's been working great for me. Add 32MB EDO/FPM ram and you'll have great resolution (1200x600dpi) and good printing speed.

Some people reported the drum and/or toner lasting shorter than expected.

Yeah I was looking at this acutally, and then today on the website, it shows $249.99. ARGH. Was there a promotion for it this week or something?

I have seen these in the $120-150 range at staples when they go on sale. This would be considered warm but still a good deal.

Edit: I have one of these and its a great printer for the price. I only wish it could duplex.

I wish I knew how much life my HL-1240 has left in it.

Whenever this printer goes under $200 it's very tempting to buy.

On the OfficeMax page, when you compare it to another printer (say the HP 1000), it says it has duplex printing.

Bleh.. either way, its back up to $249.

Just want to say that at any reasonable price this printer is a bargain. I print a several thousand pages a week. One minor issue - I will, on occasion, need to unplug the USB cable. I'd say that I need a better cable! Printing so much must encourage corrosion. Other that that I am sold on Brother. I also bought the Brother network printer from Dell. A breeze to network, like the HP, and unlike the QMS Minolta. Toner is also cheap and if you are cheaper the drum can be recharged. I also bought the fax with the same printing engine. Like I said I am sold on brother!

Most manufacturers only ship printers like 1/2 full straight out of the box. This could lend to the possible misconception of toner capacity/duration. The companies make all the profit margins on the toner/cartridges.

Where in the heck do you put extra memory into this printer, and where can I buy some? I heard about it way back when I first bought it, but like an idiot did not purchase any. Any ideas?

Check the manual in the CDROM, it has illustration about where to put the extra memory into the printer.

For memory, go to ebay, search SIMM. You can put a 32MB SIMM 72pin to the printer. I happened found a 8MP SIMM in my drawer. 🙂 Then I can print at 600dpi. The printing quality is great.

This is a great little printer.

If you have one, it is worth buying another at this price just to get the drum unit and (small capacity) toner cartridge. And keep the rest of the printer in storage to use when the first one craps out!

Additional memory is absolutely needed and goes in the back. Look for the largish metal cover plate held in place by two phillips head screws, near the 25 pin connector. As someone mentioned, it will take either FPM or EDO memory, which is nice since EDO is often cheaper than FPM these days.

If you buy supplies, always get the TN460 toner cart. It is exactly the same as the TN430, but has more toner in it. Another thread on this printer in these pages gives a source for third-party toner to refill the cart. Conveniently, the toner carts have a little plastic filling plug that snaps in and out.

I got one from staples when they used for a subsitution on a marginal Minolta 1250, added the ram and wow! what a printer. My cost is under a penny a page!! I put it on the printserver, so now I don't have to yell at the kids for killing the ink on the inkjet. This thing is awesome!!

Maybe with other companies, but Brother supplies the standard TN-430 toner and DR400 drum with the 1440 retail boxed printer.
