I found this drive at my local microcenter for both $69.99 in front of the store and back with the other optical drives at $59.99, in both cases it was OEM. Came with beige and black bezels.

Seems like a good drive so far, burning Ritek G05 -R's at 8x no problems.

TSST == Toshiba Samsung Storage Technologies == Joint venture with Toshiba and Samsung. Reads DVD-r at 16x, which is nice for a change.

Pay extra for the media (LightScribe CD-Rs are currently going for $1+ each) and wait 28 minutes to make a monochrome label. When an Epson Rseries will do a color label in 3 minutes.

Is labeling really that important? The yamaha TAT2 (or whatever it was called) label system didn't really catch on, and I don't think this will either...

I wonder if this technology will be available to existing CD/DVD burners via software and/or firmware upgrades. Any thoughts? How is this implemented? (Using the same laser that burns your DVD, or a seperate/extra laser)? And if it's the same laser does it require additional hardware or simply some additional firm/software?

I'm hoping the latter since I think this is a really great idea. I, for one, cannot use sticky labels on my CDs that I use in my car stereo. At least 50% of the time my CD player has significant trouble ejecting the disk when there is a label on it, requiring the use of a pair of tweezers to assist in the eject. Anyone else have this problem?

Firmware is up to rev 6

Newegg offer on beige bezel drive with software.

Any particular reason why this is better then a NEC 3500A or 3520A?
I know the NEC 3500A is well liked because of its firmware "tweaks" that add higher burning rates for more 4x media and such.

I am definately in the market for a drive and havent really been exposed to anything else besides the NEC's "tweakability" that is so popular.

Hope someone can give some thoughts on this drive and its appeal. (Noting I do see the prices is a bit less, unfortunately the Newegg reviews didnt hint much else as far as firmware abilties go)

We should be jealous of 2 minute-men because they only need 2 minutes to plant a seed whereas other men take forever to do the same thing. 2 minute-man = efficient man. ;)

I also bought one of these drives at Microcenter for $59 Friday. Very happy with it so far.

you need new burner. it is the same laser that burns your data that burns the labels. you cannot just flash ur drive as was the case with dl writing.
@50, lightscribe does not take data space on the disc. you burn the label on the label side. yamaha's solution required you to leave some data space on the disc for the label. that's way it wasn't too successful imo

When I bought mine, the new NEC drive had not been released. The only software offered with NEC drives was and is Roxio. The price on the Samsung drive has gone up in the meantime. I probably won't buy any dual layer media for at least another year. I only use the drive for imaging my hard drive installation and backing up data.

Movie buffs may want to go with the NEC. The day after my Samsung drive arrived, the NEC 3520 was announced. It still isn't bundled with Nero.
