Yeah I was checking these out when this thread was posted. Pretty damn good prices. I mean a comparable player like the Sandisk Sansa series is usually more $$. Then again these are refurbs. I was hoping to read some more comments on that.

A few days ago I started a thread and a guy said he got a 2gb refrub Nano (this is one of the ones I'm considering) but it skipped fairly often like a CD player. Someone replied to the effect that say Apple turns this thing on, it works fine, they package as a refurb and someone else gets it. I don't really like the sound of that, I mean I surely wouldn't want a Nano that skips often!

But good prices, so I'm still considering one of these. I don't think I want picture or video capability, so either a 2GB Nano or a 4GB Mini for $100 look best out of those. But the Sandisk Sansa ones look awesome. But unfortunately the price difference between the video E-series and not as nice M-series is very small, so I'd probably feel inclinced to get the E-series. About $160 I believe for a 4GB E260, which seems like an awesome player, plus has expandable microSD slot. Yet OTOH I could have a 5th gen 30gb Video/everything Ipod for $180 shipped. Hmph.

The Apple site says,

"Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:

* is fully tested (including full burn-in testing).
* is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testing.
* is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection.
* is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new boxes, etc.).
* includes the operating software originally shipped with the unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each products "Learn More" for more details.
* is given a new refurbished part number and serial number.
* is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.

Refurbishment procedures follow the same basic technical guidelines as Apple's Finished Goods testing procedures. "

So far, mine has been perfect. Not a blemish on it and it plays fine.:)

pretty good deals, stupid question can an ipod be used as an external hard drive to save any file types.

Yes, you can use the iPod to store data on it as well. Makes for a nice, quick and easy backup of important documents you may be working on away from home. :)

Yes, and with the battery built-in, it's an excellent portable hard drive to use on older systems where the USB ports don't put out enough power for an external hard drive.

No its 1 year.

Just got my 30GB in, looks brand new, no scratches or anything and works great. Loaded up 12.5GB of music, checked its headphone out (sounded better than I expected), and then used a line out cable to hook it up to my amp. Very pleased with it.

Now, I'll probably give Rockbox a try and see if the sound quality difference is enough to justify using it.

I had the Sansa E260 and the sound felt too processed for me. My benchmark was a Iriver H140 and a Creative Muvo2 5GB that I picked up for $99 recently. These are, of course, ancient models but even after hours of listening to my music thru the E260, I couldn't quite get used to it. I finally gave it away to my niece and, after retiring the venerable H140, am now using the Muvo2 pending the arrival of my recently ordered Ipod 30GB video refurb.
