This player no longer supports regular VCDs. Apex took out the VCD playback function on this model about a year ago. Now, you won't see the "VCD" sticker on the box.

Wasn't there an RCA deal w/ progressive scan for $50?

From what I've seen of these units (Apex AD1200), they are either hit or miss for people. I personally own a AD-1200 and I know a few friends that have AD-1500. They are very VERY cheaply built. Mine is extremely sensitive to scratches and will sometimes skip minutes worth of DVD playback. Horrible unit. I would go w/ a different brand. Maybe even that Norcent on Amazon over this thing.

I picked up the Apex AD-1201 DVD player a few weeks ago at CC for $50, and it's been great so far (knock on wood). It plays everything I have thrown at it -- including SVCDs.

This player DOES play DVD-Rs.

I tried it out last night at my girlfriend's house :)
