HOT 9800 PRO, is this normal?

Hey guys, I have a 3200+, Asus K8V SE Deluxe, a gig of corsair ram, and I used to have a 9600 pro, and my temps with no additional thermal paste, and stock heatink were around 30-32c idle, and 42 max load.. I just got a 9800PRO, put it in, and I noticed my entire computer is running significantly hotter! Even the outside of my case is warm when I touch it since putting it in. My temps have raised from low 30s idle, to 40c idle, 50+c load. I put a fan in the slot on the case window, and it seemed to help a little, since my temps are now 37c (and mobo is at 35). I know this is not BAD, but I was wondering if this is just how all 9800 pros are, and do they just run this hot?

Is there anything i can do/buy to cool this thing down? Maybe I got a defect, and I should exchange it?

Thanks in advance, any help is appriciaited!

Yeah, lots of peeps complain about the whimpy stock HSF. I don't seem to have a prob, but I've got several case fans with a side panel fan blowing across my 9800 pro.

I think the Arctic cooling VGa silencer is what many peeps use. Google it. IIRC, it blows the warm air out the back of your case to help keep case and cpu temps down.

But I haven't used one since I don't seem to need it and don't wanna blow my 3 yr warranty. So, others who have added after-market cooling s/b able to help you better. If one of them doesn't drop by and post, might wanna re-post in the video section. Plus, you can check out forums specific to OCing vid cards, after market cooling for vid cards is a fairly frequent topic.

mine get's pretty hot too. if i'm gaming for a while i can't hold my finger against the heatsink on it for too long without it hurting. the fan is pretty loud too. I'm going to water cool it soon enough:) also i've seen people take cpu heat sinks and thermal epoxy them on to the 9800 for overclocking it

yes the 9800 pro gets very hot. svc.com has the arctic cooler 3 for about $15 (or had). It will help a bit.

Thanks. Im not really all that concerned about overclocking, or the cards temperature. What I am concerned about is my CPU and MB temps have rised after I installed the 9800 PRO almost 10 degrees C. Is that normal? The thing is just giving off a hell of a lot of heat. If I stick my hand anywhere around the card, I can feel a lot of heat coming off it, and its heating up my entire case and everything in my computer. I guess ill just have to live with it. I was playing a game for about 2 hours straight, and checked the temps and they were 41c, which is pretty good, but I am idling at like 37/38 now. Oh well, I guess ill just buy a few extra fans.

Thanks for the replys!

9800 pro can run up to 60-70 c on the wimpy stock hs.

but still, 10c is a lot..too much for just the vid card. i would check if everything else is working ok.

Okay, with my new fan placement it looks to have helped a little. I get around 33-34 idles now which is pretty good.. But it seems like I can never get back down to my high 20's again with the A/C on :( oh well.

thanks!
