Be warned, Diamond has horrible customer/driver support in my experience. If they don't have XP compatibility now, I wouldn't count on it.... It's only $10 though...

I have the diamond supramax 56k v90 (not v92) PCI modem and it's okay for 10$... it's always been pretty cheap, maybe 15-20$ because the modem is basically a pretty cheap modem. No problems with drivers or compatability but overall the modem isn't that good. I had much better speeds with my US Robotics modem, but when I bought my epox 8k7a i had to get rid of the ISA modem and was stuck with this cheap PCI one. If you're looking for a cheap modem then it's okay but if you're used to US Robotics type quality then it's not so good.

I saw this modem in Best Buy today and it had a sticker on the box that stated "V.92 Upgradeable!" That was the extent of the sticker (although I didn't look for fine print).

This page (Click Here) seems to indicate a lot of their modems that are not upgradeable.

I should have looked at that sticker more closely! ;)

None of there v90 modems are upgradable. there are a few that they have been experimenting with but beta is available on very few. This modem is ok, you should be able to pick it up for less than 15 with no mir.. tough to program with win 2000 and win xp

I bought the modem at best buy today and the box clearly says v.92 ready-printed on the box, not a sticker. The UPC code label says Supramax 56i V92 PCI RTL US so I assume there must be someway to make it V92. Inside the box is a card that says "Congratulations on the purchase of your new Diamond V.92 Modem". I'll try to upgrade at the website and let you know.

<< Damn, who the heck is still using a dial-up modem? >>

Unfortunately, very many of us.

After having cable modem for 3+ years, i moved and can't get any broadband whatsoever...u'd figure it would be available living in a major city. So dialup modems are the only viable option for me and alot of us.

unfortunately, our options here are to be gouge by the telco/cable company for at least $40/month or $10/month for an unlimited dialup.

I have a Diamond Monster 2, Diamond TNT2 Ultra, and MX 300 soundcard, drivers took forever to came out. They used to be the best, now they're just a useless company wasting away. Don't expect much, if any, support from them.

Wow, after all of the permanent "V.92" branding on the box and the manual, I'm surprised that they make the customer upgrade at their website.

Hardly a gouge and worth every penny of that $40 IMO. Maybe a better paying job?? ;)

<< i'd rather die than dialup >>

I'll drink to that! :D

Just remember... your ISP has to support V.92 as well. Also if you have one of those Lucent Winmodems, you can sorta hack the drivers to support V.92 as well. Just go to Zoom's website and download their V.92 drivers and manually install them over the original ones.

If you have a hardware controlled V.90 modem, there might be a chance where you can update it to V.92 via firmware flash.

i'd rather die than dialup

To each his own; there are those of use who would rather not have broadband access than live in the midst of the "great unwashed" in urban areas. ;)

I HATE waiting for my slow speed connection, but I would hate living in an urban/suburban area again even MORE!

I figure in another year or so the ~$600 upfront costs of 2-way satellite access will come down to a level I am willing to pay and then I will have the best of both worlds. Once the upfront costs are absorbed, a combined satellite TV, 2-way satellite access and discontinuing the second phone line nets out to about what I am paying in toto now for ISP, satellite TV and second phone line.

Again, too each his own...

Aren't you forgetting the ~$20 for the dedicated computer phone line? Seems like you're paying close to the same price for much less IMO... Not the best economical decision. ;)
