I've bought media from them before and have had no problems. I've also been tempted to get one of those drives, but I think I'm disciplined enough to hold out from upgrading until I can get a DL drive and media.

Wow this looks very tempting. Anybody has any experience with the TDK brand with respect to DVD burners.
Firewire makes it even more tempting. The least for a External Firewire Enclosure is $30. So in retrospect you are getting an internal drive for $40 and a $30 Firewire enclosure.
But the catch here is that it is recertified and only 4X and not Dual Layer. An 8X Internal can be got for $80 (Good deal with IR, AC, AR, PM).

So the answer thar I am looking for before I decided to take a plunge are.

1. Whats the track record of TDK Burners ?
2. What about the recertified thing ?
3. Speed only 4X. Am I ready to pay $40 for 4X specially when it is without any sort of rebates. I dont mind waiting a bit more for burning.
4. Not a Dual Layer. I dont mind that either as it will be atleast an year or two before I can afford a dual layer DVD disc, or by the time they are about 50c a piece. The dual format Burners will be 12X - 16X and about $50 by that time. And time will be right for change.

Well at the same time I still expect some better technology to store data (music, movies, photos, documents) other than this CD/DVD crap which although is reducing paper/album/casette clutter, but now you have CD/DVD clutter. Anyway I have no choice, so ready to invest in another drive.
