Hosts file in Win98 keeps creating new text document.......

OK, so normally when I save something to the "hosts" file under the Windows directly, it simply saves and then I exit & the next time I open a browser & test the site IP I saved it goes nowhere......(my intended result).

But I'm trying to save something into the hosts file and it keeps creating a 'new' hosts file as a text document.


So now I have the original hosts file (which Windows doesn't recognize, so you select notepad or wordpad to open it with) but then I also have another file named hosts that is a text document. So I can't save to the original hosts file 'cuz it just keeps making this new hosts file as a text doc.

Any ideas???
 
Huh, it looks like Notepad can't imagine a file without an extension. 😕

First, you need to go into your Windows Explorer settings so you can see the difference between the files. Hold down Windows key, press E, go to Tools menu -> Folder Options, View tab, and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Now you'll see a file "Hosts" and a file "Hosts.txt" (in Windows Explorer when you go to the folder containing them). Delete "Hosts" and rename "Hosts.txt" to "Hosts". (It will warn you that you may not be able to access the file, but ignore that.)

And while I *was* thinking it had to do with file-extension identification, I wouldn't have thought to fix it the way you suggested. I'd have probably deleted the .txt association and then reeeeeeeeeally been scratchin' my head.....LOL!!

Well, I rarely frequent anything other than FS/FT or OT but I've been to P&N a few times, so I'm sure I'd have had a tough enough skin ta' fend him off........LOL!! 😛


I'd say it's sad.....(though I know some folks who go for high 3dMark scores supposedly still use Win98 sometimes to put up a high #)......but as for me, work is still under Win 98 'cuz we use a Novell/Btrieve server setup.

HOWEVER.......we've recently figured out that XP will work on it just fine despite our original beliefs so maybe with any luck, we'll be on XP soon!! 😕
