Hostname Standard?

Hi,

Does anyone know if you could have non-alphanumeric characters in your hostname, such as space, dashes, parens, brackets...etc?

I'm pretty sure that there's some kind of standard for this type of thing, so could anyone direct me to where I could find documents on this standard.

Avoid spaces and underscores. Hyphens are usually acceptable.

Actually, even if your particular name resolution system will allow you to use weird characters, your best bet is to stick to alphanumeric and maybe dashes if you need them.
