I just backed up one of my hosted domains using cpanel.
I got a file that ends in tar.gz

Is that what I need to upload to a new host?

(In all seriousness...)

.tar = tarball ... it combines multiple files into one (used to be used for tape backup)
.gz = gzipped ... compressed... think winzip on steroids

Together, it's a combination of all of your files into a single file... then compressed.

If you send it to me, I can extract it for you and make a .zip if that's easier for you.

It's an archive, preserving folders and files.

Pretty much all you need, though if you have a CMS or forum system you probably would want to back up any databases separately (in MySQL, for instance), as well.

I like making tars cause it's an easy way to archive without compressing. Some things don't compress, and taking the time and cpu cycles to try is a waste.

1) Find new web host.
2) Give new web host your old cPanel login details.
3) They upload and restore for you.
4) Change underwear.

I usually use uncompressed rar ("store").

You're right about the waste. I don't bother compressing lossy files, but I'll bet a lot of people don't realize they don't compress or don't compress well.

And most of what you have all said is a foreign language. I do think someone might have mentioned Tasha Yar.

Everybody knows Olds goes Commando!

In all seriousness, you need to do what Ross specified. That backup you have is not all you need for a cpanel move. Somebody with server admin privileges has to do do it.

I believe they only do that for reseller accounts and I was trying to go cheaper.

The new hosting company (I haven't changed yet, just asking) told me I would have to do it manually.

What do you have hosted?

If it's just files, the .tar file is enough. If you have anything that required installations - like forums, content management system, etc - you just need to make a backup of the SQL database(s), as well, and upload it onto the new server. If I remember correctly, in cPanel you can do that in phpMyAdmin.

It's been a while since I had to transfer between hosts, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no idea what I'm doing when I untar something. After several attemps and zero manual reading, I've settled on xfv as being the right combination to untar something.
What do you do with the feathers afterwards?

Mostly nothing. 7 sites total. 5 just have index files with some pics on other pages.
2 have a Fantastico script (Gallery, IIRC) installed for picture viewing.
I just don't want to recreate the index files as I did them in Word and every time I do it, it takes 5-10 tries to get it all right. Honestly if I lost it all, it wouldn't be horrible.
I am running HTTrack on one of them now to try and get all the pictures off.

I do plan to do more with the sites as time (and retirement) permits.

The ones with index files and pics should be fine, but I think Gallery required SQL database for login/user information. So long as you have the pics, and the new host has Fantastico, you could just reinstall Gallery and transfer over the pics afterward. Then you don't have to worry about databases at all, assuming you were the only user on your sites.

Hmmm, looking now.

If you use personalized DNS nameservers (ns1.oldsmoboat.com ns2.oldsmoboat.com) make sure to update those as well.

If you don't or want to know how to, let me know and I'll show you how :)
