I just backed up one of my hosted domains using cpanel.
I got a file that ends in tar.gz
Is that what I need to upload to a new host?
4) Change underwear.
I like making tars cause it's an easy way to archive without compressing. Some things don't compress, and taking the time and cpu cycles to try is a waste.
Let's not get crazy now. That's too many new things at one time.
I believe they only do that for reseller accounts and I was trying to go cheaper.1) Find new web host.
2) Give new web host your old cPanel login details.
3) They upload and restore for you.
4) Change underwear.
The new hosting company (I haven't changed yet, just asking) told me I would have to do it manually.Everybody knows Olds goes Commando!
In all seriousness, you need to do what Ross specified. That backup you have is not all you need for a cpanel move. Somebody with server admin privileges has to do do it.

What do you do with the feathers afterwards?I have no idea what I'm doing when I untar something. After several attemps and zero manual reading, I've settled on xfv as being the right combination to untar something.
Mostly nothing. 7 sites total. 5 just have index files with some pics on other pages. What do you have hosted?
If it's just files, the .tar file is enough. If you have anything that required installations - like forums, content management system, etc - you just need to make a backup of the SQL database(s). If I remember correctly, in cPanel you can do that in phpMyAdmin.
It's been a while since I had to transfer between hosts, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

2 have a Fantastico script (Gallery, IIRC) installed for picture viewing.
I just don't want to recreate the index files as I did them in Word and every time I do it, it takes 5-10 tries to get it all right. Honestly if I lost it all, it wouldn't be horrible.
I am running HTTrack on one of them now to try and get all the pictures off.
I do plan to do more with the sites as time (and retirement) permits.
Hmmm, looking now.Depends, is your old domain with your registrar still? You'll need to change the nameservers over to that one.
