I have 3 domains I own. 2 are mine and another was a gift to a friend that I admin. Right now I have 3 seperate accounts with one host, if I switch to another host with a good deal of bandwidth and space, do I need to have a reseller account to do so or am I able to host multiple domains? I see people advertise "unlimited addons", does that mean domains to add on?

If this works out, I might be posting a hot deal too ;)

It really depends on the hosting company you go with. A lot of companies allow you to host multiple domains from a single 'shared' hosting account but there are limitations. Most companies just setup the new domains as 'pointed' domains so you get a seperate folder for them, but thats about it.. no sepearte mail (some work using an alias), no control panel, and a lot of the times the stats are shared between all of the domains. You might consider a virtual private server, which a lot of companies are offering these days. This would allow you to host as many completely seperate domains as you want.

So, basically it might become an admin nightmare to keep track of. Especially if I am providing pop mailing for all the domains. Guess I better look into a reseller account. Unfortunately, they are alot higher cost. Shrug...maybe I will set up a bunch of little accounts. Also rather annoying....

Agreed.

If you get a virtual web hosting account with cPanel and use the "add on" domain feature it sucks.

If you get a real resellers account with WHM/cPanel everything is separate, each domain gets it's own cPanel, it's own email, FTP, MySQL, etc. nothing is "shared" like with add on domains.

What's this Hot Deal you speak of?

I vote resellers account all the way.

Well, there are a few accounts, but since I can't do multiple domains, it doesn't help me much.

Both over at WebHostingTalk there is 2 companies GetYourHost.com that is offering accounts 50% off and cheap as hell
or
HostingLite is close to the same price too.

I guess I am going to need to find some decent reseller accounts or set up a bunch of little accounts. :disgust:

I was going to PM but probably this will help others as well, I got thrillhost now (thanks to you as always) but their uptime is real sporadic, what else do you rec as a reseller for about 10/month.

In that price range you're SOL.

Here are some other options (listed best first):

Ross and I have been going back and forth regarding this topic. I've decided on UU.net once dathorn gets themselves situated so I can cancel my account w/o any hassle.

As for mesopia, I contacted the sales department and the owner, Jay, responded fairly quickly. He was very curteous and answered all my questions. However, there were a couple of posts both on WHT and Mesopia's website in regards to accounts taking a while before they were created. Some ppl had problems while others didnt have this problem.

Anyways, I spoke with UU.net's owner and he's a very nice guy. Took the time to answer all my questions via AIM and is more than willing to help me move my accounts over.

I was wondering when you would come in here and offer your two cents ;)

I agree that UU's support has been very helpful (but unfortunately S L O W), they moved a few of my dathorn domains with no problems at all.

Yea ... takes me a while to actually find these type of questions. Better start using the search engine more.

I spoke with UU's owner yesterday and he stated he hired someone to handle support during the day. This person is actually based in the US, so support tickets will be handled fairly quickly now. However, it might be a problem if my webhosting company starts rolling and if i encounter problems I need a fairly quick response.

I use a VPS account with ApolloHosting. I am pretty happy with them overall and they offered a pretty fair deal. It is 40 bucks/month (if you sign up for a year) for their start kit which gives you 1 gig of storge and 30 gig of data transfer.

After some quick hellos and some chatting with Rick from Made 2 Own, he was willing to swing me a deal if I pimp the service a bit :)

Real nice guy and was more than willing to bicker a more than competitive deal for me. Well, mostly because I told him I would give him full rights to all the porn i post. :p

Check them out if you have hosting wants/needs. Seems like a good crew with very speedy response. Now to get all of my domains transferred.......

Nope they just buy the same $39.95 template from templatemonster.com ;)

The 3 best designed web host sites I have seen are:
HTTPme.com - loads super fast, plain, basic, nice colors, no flash, forums on the front page. Awesome.
dathorn.com was designed by timechange.com nice simple layout, information is easy to find.
clook.net - simply the best along with their clook.info site.

Good idea staying away from the templates.

ParticleSeven.com is owned and operated by a fellow AT'er :)

I used ultraunix.net and it works great for me, so I would reccomend it. You'll want to follow up on RossMAN's offer above for that reseller account, it's a great price and it's well worth the money versus multiple shared accounts.

RossMan PMed me and requested my presence here and because I have so much respect for him, here I am.

I don't really know what needs answering here. But I'll make a few points.

1. I own and operate Particle Seven. I do absolutely no advertising except for word of mouth. Most of my signups are through referrals. It helps that my friend runs a web design company and he sends me alot of his customers. It's a good partnership. When a small company or individual asks to have a site designed, they don't want to go throught the trouble of finding a webhost. They will almost always listen to recommendations.

2. At one point I too had multiple domains, mostly because they are so cheap. Also, I like seperation of ideas. For instance, I have a photo host for items like watches and headphones. I can explain why this is for people that are interested. Anyway, I didn't want these mixing with my main personal site, so I gave them their own domain. After a while I needed some way to have them all under one account. This lead to my talking with RossMan (through PM's and AIM and Phone). He was and still is really into this web hosting venture. I figure why not? I mean I know PLENTY of people that want or need hosting. You know, everyone wants to have their little space on the web. And if I am going to get an account to host my 3-5 websites, I am going to have plenty of room left over doing nothing. Why not put it to use.

3. My hosting service is pretty complete right now. There are other steps I could take but I really don't feel they are worth it right now. Again, it doesn't seem like the OP is asking about a profit venture. He just wants it for himself. So I will keep my thoughts about running a company for another time.

Take care.

Yes, Rossman is an expert when it comes to this topic. I owe it all to him for helping me startup my own company. It should be launching within the next few months! Glad to see others on this board who run their own webhosting company.
