Hosting: Any cheap ones that don't give you CPU overage suspensions?

I have been leaning towards Bluehost, then maybe Dreamhost, since both offer SSH access. I had GoDaddy so I guess I can't get any worse.

Can't they somehow allocate CPU time so you don't get overages and it just takes a bit longer? So when you site gets Dugg it just goes slow instead of suspending your account.

People happy with Bluehost?

I doubt any host can allocate CPU time with shared hosting. You'd be better off looking at a VPS or dedicated server.

As for being Dugg/reddited/slashdotted, it comes down to how well you can cache and optimize your website. I've had websites on Dreamhost that held up to Digg very well, thanks to efficient caching.

Yeah, I think a VPS is what you want. My VPS with Steadfast Networks is only ~$25/month (a control panel like Plesk is $5/month extra), and I've been very happy with them.

I use asmallorange for hosting and have had a good experience with them. They don't oversell, have good uptime and are known to be fairly digg proof. If you go over your allotted resource limit your set stays up, they just charge you a little more for the extra bandwidth. You may have to pay a tad more than you would for other hosts but nothing unreasonable.

I was using Canaca.com, worked very well, I didn't get tagged by major sites, but I did burn through 200GB+ of bandwidth a month, mostly on media files. Never had an issue with CPU.

I've moved over to Hostgator as they actually update their software (cPanel > Ensim), and my subdomains will work again. Canaca made a change a few years back that screwed over existing customers big time, and ever since then things have been acting weird.
