Ok in the internal network the IP of the Router is 192.168.1.1 and the computers have IPs 192.168.1.2 and so on.
Obviously to the outside world the 192.168.1.1 doesn't exist, so do I have to check the Router setup every time I want to host an FTP to check the IP# the cable modem is sending? This will work right? Also is there any easier way of doing this that i'm missing? Thanks for listening.

To host FTP, you'll need to know the WAN address assigned you by your provider (so you can give it to those who want to log on), and then forward port 21 to the internal IP address of the system you want to use as the server.

If it is dynamic and the router is obtaining it automatically, you can't tell what it is just by looking in setup. The tables will tell you what the identifier and gateway are, but not the address itself.

WAN:
(MAC Address: 00-20-78-CE-B3-1B)
IP Address: 64.132.32.215

Unfortunately I don't have a static IP assigned from the ISP. But when I look in the Router's setup menu the above is what I see, I can use this number as my FTP address yes?

Yeah, use that IP number. Depending on your provider, your IP number may not change very often. If you have the firmware version that allows "keep-alive" for your connection, then your router should never "let go" of your IP number.

Go to "advanced" and forward port 21 to the IP number (internal LAN number) of your ftp server. Hopefully your server computer has a static IP number so the the port will be forwarded to the correct computer. If your server doesn't have a static IP number, then you can keep the same IP internal IP number by leaving the computer turned on. ;) You know what I mean ;)

If you want something a little easier to remember, use dhs.org's free dynamic naming service. Then you can pick up the "ftp.orbius.dhs.org" name and you won't have to remember your new IP address every time. There are programs that will automatically determine your IP address and update the dhs.org address as your IP changes such as this one here

It's just a little easier.
