Hosting 40 guests next weekend - best instant coffee to buy?

Hey guys,

Wife and I are hosting 40 guests next Saturday for our daughter's first birthday. I'm a coffee drinker but never touch the instant stuff, and honestly every instant I ever had has the same strange taste to me.

So, I'm not about to start brewing for 40 people in the middle of the party, and I need some recommendations for the best tasting instant coffee.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: Found a "Mount Hagen" instant coffee on amazon that is one of the highest rated instant coffees. never heard of it though but may give it a shot.

Starbucks VIA

edit:
To expand on that... VIA is easily the best tasting instant I've had. It's pretty close to real coffee. Problem is it's expensive. While it's almost as good as real, it isn't as good, and the cost isn't justified for what you get.

I'd look into large capacity brewers. A largish party once a year will pay for it over time

I'd pick up a couple of those gallon jugs (the brewed "party pack" thing) from Caribou or Starbucks.

Nescafe Classico is quite good and it's on Amazon. Also great reviews. I drink it a few times a week

"Best instant coffee" in an oxymoron.

That. 40 people at a party you don't serve instant. Even if there was an instant that was good (there isn't) it's an unworkable solution. People are going to be drinking coffee all day and if you serve instant either you or they are going to spend the entire day heating water. Buy or rent a large 50-100 cup brew vessel. Set it and forget it.

No shit. While I'm sure some are better tasting than others, none will be as good as a decent cup of brewed coffee.
For me, if the only coffee option is instant..."Oh, no thanks. Just a glass of water, please."

Yeah, just bust out the ol' full cup of coffee maker and make a full batch. Not that many people drink coffee - especially after dinner, and making another pot isn't exactly difficult.

tbh, I fucking hate this stupid Keurig gimmick bullshit. It's not easier, and it's a way to turn something that was cheap into something expensive.

It's a bit easier. Cleanup is much quicker than a regular maker. It's not 50¢/cup worth of easy though. For that price, it should be delivered to my chair. They're also incredibly wasteful. Every cup makes a piece of plastic trash that has to be dealt with.

For me, no more than maybe 20 seconds quicker. Dump a filter in the trash, rinse the carafe, put it on the drainboard. Wash the works about once a month or so.

Forty adults (plus, I assume, children) for a kid's first birthday party? Jesus Christ.

LOL. This forum's auto-save of drafts bit me in the ass. That was an earlier reply that I chose not to post. Oops.

A child's first birthday party isn't for the child. Seems excessive, but if you want to throw a party, it's as good a reason as any.

I don't know what's available in the states but here you can get a "keg" from Tim Horton's, it's basically a large plastic thermos with a tap. I don't recall how many cups, like 100 maybe, but they've brought them in at work before for meetings and what not. There is also the "10 packs" which is the same idea but smaller, in a cardboard box dispenser. Maybe Starbucks has something similar?

Otherwise I'd probably just brew a large batch with regular drip machines. Buy a couple extra machines to have multithreaded coffee processing and redundancy and it should not really be too hard to put out 40+ cups of coffee in a half decent time frame, then leave a couple pots on the warmer for refills and brew more as needed.

I think you misunderstand the term oxymoron.

Even if instant coffee is agreed universally that it tastes terrible, you can still have a "best" version of it.

Now if he had said "Good tasting instant coffee", then your oxymoron comment would make sense.

never seen those in a 100 pack, but the 10/20 packs are awesome. They're great when you've got a crowd.

side-note. Used Tim's mobile order this morning for the first time today. decent experience.

As others have said, I'd rent the giant thermos that you can get at starbucks or similar. No idea how much it costs, but it's definitely easier. You can also just get the boxed coffee from them which is like 96 oz (24 4oz cups) for $13 or so. I've done that quite often for smaller office gatherings.

Keurig and a variety of K-cups - brews one cup at a time and people can pick the type they want

That would cover you for the future if you ever invite coffee drinkers over outside of this party.

(I don't have one myself, it's just as easy for me to use a porcelain cone + filter and a lot cheaper.)

Get a Keurig and you can instantly divide the room between ultra rightwingers and normal humans by who gets angry at the sight of a Keurig. Should make for an interesting 1st BDay for your daughter.

You can do that here at nearly any coffee shop, and is probably the best bet for this type of gathering. Starbucks, Caribou, Pete's, whatever will sell them in 4 liters? or so insulated containers.
