"Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies mistakenly shot two hostages, killing one, earlier this week as the men fled a knife-wielding captor in West Hollywood, officials said Thursday. John Winkler, a 30-year-old TV production assistant who had recently arrived from Washington state to pursue a career in entertainment, was hit once in the chest when three deputies opened fire on him Monday night at an apartment complex, officials said in a statement."

Anyone understand this? Since the guy wasn't holding a deadly weapon, I don't see any reason to fire on him.

they were in a situation where they knew hostages where held. they thought it was the bad guy. instead of trying to do it right they shot.

that is what they are trained to do

Read the article idiot...
"The apartment door suddenly opened and a male victim came rushing out," the statement said. "He was covered in blood and bleeding profusely from the neck. Simultaneously, Winkler ran out of the door, lunging at the back of the fleeing victim. Both ran directly at the deputies."

Winkler fit the general description of the suspect — a white man in a black shirt — and when he bolted out of the apartment, deputies believed Winkler was the assailant, officials said.

Uh...
-hostage situation
-guy comes running out of building, blood everywhere
-second guy comes running out of building, unhurt and on the first guy's heels

What about any of that says to you guys "freeze and ponder the situation"?

So just shoot them both?

So stop the second one. The first is obviously not a threat, and the second could very easily be the hostage taker. Ideally they would tase him or do something else non lethal, but we hardly live in an ideal place.

LAPD should recruit some manly men, instead of pansies that shoot anything that moves. :awe:

Here's the problem with LAPD. Too dumb to get into college? Too cowardly to join the military? Lack skill or talent to learn a legitimate trade? Like to power trip and hide behind a uniform?

Did the cops expect the hostages to not run directly at them? Did they have weapons?

Damn these cops are dumb.

With that said hostage situations are nasty. You're supposed to keep a very low profile. If you're ever in this same situation you should probably dive out the door and stay down.
