VMs don't have virtual hardware of every type for every OS. What version of VirtualBox do you have?

Have you tried Vmware Player?
 
have you checked to see if transfer speeds are higher than 100mbps? I know on ESXI I had a virtual NIC report as 1gbps and I was able to get more than that out of it.
