Hospital is bad.

Was at the hospital from like 9:30am Friday to 6pm Saturday, it was fail. Friday was a piece of shit, an hour to get into the ER, then I had like 3 different people lie to me about timeframes and stuff. And they also just flat out lied a few times.

Saturday wasn't as bad, I had a scope and ultrasound on my stomach, and I have gall sludge, and gillbert's syndrome.

Needless to say, was kind of a waste.

I've lost like 15 lbs since I been sick, it is hard to eat.

Anyone have either of the above?

They had wifi! I had to use a proxy to get around the filter though, lulz. Plus I was downloading torrents, and the hospital has surprisingly low bandwidth even though I was on the guest network.

Be glad you didn't go to the hospital here. Unless it's an obvious "life-or-death" emergency, it's not uncommon to wait in the emergency room for 6-8 hours to be seen.

WAY too many people (often with no money, no insurance) who use the emergency room as their family doctor.

Would this be Canada? St. Michaels in Toronto considers a 10 hour wait acceptable. We don't have death panels, we just wait for our patients to die of boredom. ^_^

What the frack?? 10hours?? I knew our emergency rooms had bad wait times but I didn't know it was that bad. Average wait around here is 3-4hours.

Damn. Around here we're doing bad if wait times are over 2 hours. Can't say I've ever waited more than 30 minutes or so to get a room. Now once you get in a room is an entirely different matter...

I think we have same issue as BoomerD, people use the emergency room as if iit were just a regular visi to the family doctor.

haha, waiting for that many hours in a room full of people with respiratory infections. Isn't it lovely?

Perhaps the reason for your wait was... other people arrived with real emergencies? Your problem hardly sounds like an emergency - sounds more like something you should have gone to a regular doctor for. If they say "okay, you're next, should be about 10 minutes" and someone with a heart attack comes in, you're waiting another hour.

People go to the emergency room when they're situation isn't an emergency? I've never been to an emergency room (haven't had the need to).

All the freaking time. My mother works as an emergency room RN. By far they get more patients with sniffles then actual emergencies. Visiting a GP is more expensive then going to the emergency room.

/facepalm

Can the emergency room deny medical treatment for non emergency visits? Like if someone comes in with a cold, can they say no, go to a GP? Or is that why there is a long wait line for some people? We'll treat you, but you'll have to wait if there's a real emergency?

I don't know any laws regarding medical treatment and patients. 😛

this really depends on where you are, i could walk into the ER here and be seen instantly. Our local hospital actually makes money, its been in the black every year for the past 10 or so

Nope. Emergency rooms are prohibited (by law) from turning away patents.

From the link,

??

In order for the hospital to determine you aren't having an emergency, a doctor has to see you. Sort of a catch 22 thing. After he seeing you and determining you don't have an emergency, doctors generally give advice.

Ah, okay. Either way, people shouldn't be going to the EMERGENCY ROOM for non emergency situations even if it is cheaper than a GP. Sigh.

Couldn't a good portion of that be done by a triage nurse?

I used to love working in the ER, (my evaluations would say stuff like "pliablemoose has a near psychic ability to diagnose his patients" literally...) when people started using it as their only source of health care and the volume ramped up to insane levels I quit working in them.

I have real mixed feeling about what's happened to ER's, on one hand, people shouldn't suffer, on the other hand many people abuse the hell out of ER services...

I was really hopeful that health care reform would change things, but it got watered down to almost no changes to what's going on now 🙁
