That's outrageous! Go to donate blood and end up paying, WTF?! And it's not like that's a small amount of cash either... So what happens if you don't pay, you get blacklisted and no longer can receive care?

This. Canada FTW.

Yeah UHC is awsome, but on the other hand, we don't get paid for giving blood.

So I guess we're even.

Maybe not.

Dear Mr. Outhouse,

Thank you for your recent contact regarding your billing statement. We provided medical services at your request. As such you are responsible for payment according to the paperwork you signed to consent for treatment ("I agree that I will be responsible for all costs not covered by my insurance carrier, etc.")

Please make neccessary arrangements for payment before your bill is sent to collections. It was a pleasure to serve you.

Sincerely,

Bonfils Hospital

We certainly pay but we don't pay close to $2,300 for checking your heart and drawing some blood.

well, when we're insured, we don't either. You do pay some rather high fees in your system, but you never see them.

Our fees are rather outrageous and more expensive than most places, but that's because we've decided that allowing insurers to set prices and malpractice to run rampant were good ideas.

Yeah, lets let the market take care of a product that has a vertical demand curve and and an inflexible supply curve.

FAIL.

well, someone's got to pay for all the drunks, homeless, uninsured poor that clog up the emergency room on a daily basis and never pay their bills.

we requested nothing. while my wife and the bonfils guy were taking care of her before she knew it a army of doctors and nurses swarmed the scene and scooped up my daughter in a wheelchair and rushed her to ER. I appreciate their concern and for being medical professionals but they didnt even give my wife or the Bonfils guy a chance to explain that things were fine she just gave blood.

I agree. They should give you free service because your daughter is a good person?

Send it to your insurance company and let them deal with it.

should they charge me for unnecessary and unrequested procedures?

Im positive if you signed anything it had a phrase saying you agree to treatment and to be ultimately responsible for payment. In just the past three years Ive seen a gastro ($????), recieved $56,000 in IV drugs, had three surgeries totalling $140,000 and everytime I read the paperwork I signed at every visit or admittance it always has that clause.

This doesnt mean however that you dont have a shot at getting it taken care of anyway.

Good luck. :)

If the bold part is true you do not owe a dime.

They did not have permission to do anything unless they had you sign the forms granting the permission and agreeing to pay.

It is very common for people to faint after a blood donation ( some more than others ). Why in the hell would they rush her to the ER? That is just stupid, even more so since she was awake and feeling better.

This. Canada FTW.

You know we have private insurance right? my co-pay is $100 for ER visits and $0 if actually admitted for post ER treatment.
