Hosed...IE, Quicken, downloads

Troubleshooting starter

  1. Overview of the problem
Everything is hosed. Can't d/l and install anything, IE returns html jubberish most of the time, pictures/graphics in IE are jacked, Quicken can't seem to get 'er done, etc.

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
Running XP (wiped the HD clean about a month ago and started over). For about the last week, IE usually returns jibberish. Sometimes a refresh will get enough useable info from a website that I can find the link I need, but usually not. Some pictures (like the graphics on the firefox home) look like I have a 1979 model graphics card. Some pictures (like on the MS IE 7 download page) are "shifted", or offset, or out of phase...chop off the left 25% of a grahpic and stick it on the right edge of the remaining 75%.

Also, can't seem to download anything that will install. Adobe Reader gives this error: "Adobe has detected a corrupt file (checksum error). The program has been closed without installing.
    Info ID: 6800.317.14.2.100921
Please send the Info ID to http://www.adobe.com/misc/bugreport.html"

IE 7 install file (I'm running 6) just craps out right away and sends off an error report. Doesn't tell me anything about the error.

Quicken seems to have random troubles downloading data...it has trouble with at least one account every time, but not the same accounts each time.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
Problem showed up in the last week, within a day or two of iTunes installing Safari. Not sure if that Safari install was before or after the problem started, but is in the ballpark. Haven't unistalled it yet because I can't D/L and install firefox or IE7 and Safari seems to be working marginally better than IE6 that I have now.

  4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
Pretty random. Some refreshes in IE will be total html muck, some will be muck by frame (some frames good, some muck), some will be perfect. Quicken errors are random. Quicken also has thrown out an error and had to shut down several times (all during account downloads), but I don't have the specific message. Will edit this post if I can get that error again.

  5. I already tried these steps:
    Pulling out hair.
    Pounding head on desk.

  6. My software:
    • Operating System and service-pack level:[/i] XP Home SP2
    • Antivirus: NAV
    • Firewall: ZoneAlarm, Windows

  7. My hardware
    • System brand & model, if it?s a pre-built system such as a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. If it?s not, fill in as much of the information below as you can.
    • Motherboard brand & model: Dell 2350
    • CPU model (and is it overclocked?): Dunno and no.
    • Video card(s) brand & model On-board
    • RAM modules brand & model (the voltage being supplied to the RAM may also be helpful to know, particularly for high-performance RAM) No idea.
    • Power supply brand & model Stock

  8. Other information that might be relevant
I'm thinking it might be a router or wireless card crapping out? Or an encryption problem? I don't really have any reason to think that, but thought I'd try to throw you off with my noob diagnosis. 😉

Maybe. You don't have two firewalls enabled at the same time, right? Any other computers there, and do they have the same problems or are they OK?

Do you have another computer that you can connect to the same connection?

This could help you identify if the problem is coming from the connection or
the computer. Also, attempt using another connection (wired vs wireless) to
see if it may be the specific device in your computer acting up.

I think you're going to have to eliminate the culprits here.

Actually, I made a mistake above...haven't re-installed ZA since my HD wipe.

No other computers, but XBox seems to work fine (wired) and TiVo seems to be OK, too (wireless).

You mentioned that you have Norton Antivirus, but not what version/generation of it. If it's not the latest version of NAV, or even if it is, you might want to get a second opinion using an online antivirus scanner such as F-Secure's. I realize that could be difficult in the situation you're in, however 😕 Do you have any reason to suspect malware?

On a different note, you could try a repair installation of Windows if there's reason to suspect something got corrupted. Method 2.

It's an old version...whatever came on the OS disk from Dell when I got the machine.

No reason to suspect malware. Really only use the machine for Quicken, ATHD, FW, E*Trade, and my.yahoo.

I think my next step will be the repair installation of XP.

Turns out it was a virus. Thought the closure of this problem might help someone down the road.

Went to one of those forums that works with HiJackThis logs (geekstogo.com, in this case).

Problem solved.

sounded like a virus, and I'd permanently disable system restore, never enable it and delete all the backups associated with it. 99.99% of viruses/trojans/malware propagate using system restore.
