Horror story from the head of the NAACP in Florida!

AndrewR

Lifer
Adora Obi Nweze, president of the NAACP in Florida, offered her own horror story. Nweze said officials in her Miami precinct tried to deny her a ballot because she had been sent an absentee ballot earlier. The civil rights leader said she never received the mailing and demanded to vote. ?You can take me to jail or let me vote,? she said she told county officials. She eventually was allowed to sign an affidavit swearing she had not previously voted.

Well, gee, they tried to make sure that her vote wasn't counted twice. How exactly is that a "horror story"?

This gets better by the minute.

because of the fact that they werent letting her vote. they were trying to do EVERYTHING they could to prevent her from voting, by creating a false story about sending an absentee ballot.

your telling me that she is the only one who has had this happen to? doubt it

Andrew,

Well, how much of a horror story depends on whether they really were trying to prevent her from voting. Or were they just trying to get her to sign something that said she hadn't also voted absentee.

Every notice how some people are always "being screwed by the man?" Make you think that something they're smoking is making they paranoid.

Standard procedure. If I had requested an absentee ballot and not gotten it a week before the election, I'd have been on the phone raising 9 kinds of hell? Smells fishy to me.

Oh yeah, and Miami is Democratic country--the Democrats run the election commission in that county AND oversee the voting. So is she complaining that her OWN party doesn't want her to vote?

Laughable.

Read the goddam quote before putting on your high and mighty hat.

<< The civil rights leader said she never received the mailing and demanded to vote >>

If she had not applied for the absentee ballot, she would have said so. Instead, she said she never received it. To very different things. They did the right thing by making sure she didn't vote twice.

Hmmm, I've just seen a loophole: She eventually was allowed to sign an affidavit swearing she had not previously voted.

How many people think she went home and mailed the absentee ballot? Heh.

Oh, the horror!! I think we need to have a re-vote for only the Democrats. They are surely wise and sage enough to pick our future President without the help of those other people, the Republicans. Perhaps to limit the re-vote so that we don't have to recount it fifty times, we should handpick the new voters. Ideally, since they are so wise and sage, we could pick only people from Gore's campaign staff, like the unbiased and non-partisan Attorney General/Gore's campaign chairman who has failed to recuse himself from the election process.

Can't we all just get along? Can't we all just vote Gore?

Andrew,

Won't work in California. Absentee ballots must be Received by voting day. Think that's true for Florida, except for the overseas absentee ballots.

ride525: I was being just a tad sarcastic with that comment. 😉 I'm not familiar with absentee ballots as I've never used one. Some friends of mine used absentee over in Europe when I was there, but I forget to request one before I left (1992). 😱

Andrew,

Actually, I thought your comment might have intended to be sarcastic.....but just thought I'd point that out........

This sounds like a setup story to me.

She knew she sent in for an absentee ballot.
Being the head of NAACP she would know voting laws inside and out, and that if the absentee ballot didnt arrive she should inquire as to why. She would have known that being sent the ansentee ballot precludes her from voting at the polls

So the set up is this:
Ask for the absentee ballot.
Dont mail it in.
Show up at the polls knowing it will be an issue.
Get the media involved.
Reel in the suckers that believe her story.

All of these campaign stunts have been done like this since there have been elections, this isnt even a new scam, just an effective one. Particularly effective with the kind press we have in US.
The only surprising part here is that she didnt use a "stooge" instead of doing it herself.

If anything we should take away from this, it is to make sure there are not double votes by absentee, and that her "ballot" didnt get cast by absentee by a different person, of either party.

The general public seems to be too stupid to see through that lame attempt at a horror story.

To think these are the people that help elect the president and support Al Gore. I really now hope that he doesnt get it even though I don't want Bush either.

Jim

I'd use that as an argument to prohibit revoting. You could have thousands of people who didn't vote the first time show up and make the same claim.

I really don't this is any more of a story than it has been in any election that it has been claimed in the past.

But I must ask MrChicken what school of higher learning did you learn your powers of deduction from?

Being the head of NAACP she would know voting laws inside and out

Lets see now, Head of an organization for black people=elections laws GURU.

So I guess the receptionist at the Red Cross should be able to perform brain surgery by your powers of deduction.

Your post almost made sense...NOT. Really what school was that?

Speaking of powers of deduction, you just compared the head of a state organization to a receptionist. Nothing like twisting examples to your favor, eh?

Bober, speaking of your powers of deduction, how did you come to this conclusion...

the head of a state organization

HAHAHA.

Good one.

Cliffc:
Let me line this out for you. Since you seem to be the only the one who cant follow this.
NAACP is is highly interested in cases of racial discrimination. Discrimantion at the voting places is one of the most historic, and ongoing examples of discrimination. As the head of the NAACP she would be very well versed in how discrimination at the polls has and can be done. In order for her to be well versed in this, she would know the law. Got it?

To correct your Red Cross example, the Head of the Red Cross should be well versed in say, Blood Donation procedures, and I expect the head of the Red Cross is well versed in Blood Donation procedures.

MrChicken

No matter how you try to make the connection it's just not there. Use any equation you think is necessary but it just doesn't add up.

The NAACP has lawyers that I'm sure know the laws but to say that the Fla. state head of it knows these laws is ridiculous, unless of course she is an election law attorney. I kinda doubt it.🙁

slipperyslope

I've never been so naive as to think I would get a standing ovation for anything I've said in any post so I'm not standing.😀

Well my county lost my voter registration a week before the election. If I had not moved and had to call to get my new polling place, I would never have known, and I would not have been allowed to vote. So who can I sue? 😉

When are people going to realize, that with a system as wide spread and with as many people to handle as this, mistakes are going to happen?

<< because of the fact that they werent letting her vote. >>

KidViciou$,

When you finally reach voting age and register, sign up as an absentee. Then, head to your nearest polling place, try to vote and see what happens.

This is standard but, unfortunately, there is enough ignorance among the public that the media can get away with running this story as if it had any relevance at all.

Cliff, while the connection is not made with you, it's made.

http://www.naacp.org/programs.asp?programs=voter

There is the link that goes to the NAACP web page for their section on voting. It is very important to the NAACP.

http://www.voterlistsonline.com/naacp/welcome2.html

You'll see that this page is titled "Voter lists online" and you'll notice this entry:
FLORIDA (5635)
President: Adora Obi Nweze
Address: 1500 Biscayne Blvd. #325, Miami, Florida 33132
Telephone: 305-995-1504 Fax 352-357-0924

So you say the "president of the NAACP in Florida" would have no need to know about this issue? Even though it is a large part of what the NAACP does?

MrChicken,

Ouch. 😉

Obivously, her qualifications for that position are now in question. Unless perhaps she knew full-well the facts at hand and had an altogether other agenda....?
