I'm writing this paper for one of my classes, and I would like some feed back from some of you guys about horror movies. My question is, why do you like horror flicks, and what makes you want to go see them when they come out in the theaters?

any help would be greatly apprecated.

I liked the Freddy Movies... yes, they were lame, but there is something about the inescapable invasion of sleep.... :)

But PinHead is the God of Horror characters!!

Why do you like horror flicks?

- It's a nice break from reality, and its interesting to see someones film with the included horror effects.

What makes me want see them in the theatre?

- It would have to be a really good movie for me to want to see it in the theatre. Most horror flicks are crummy B-rated, blood and guts type of movies. The movies that get good to see in the theatres are the psychological movies that just freak you out but don't really contain any good horror, well they might but I wouldn't classify them in the horror category.

because not much in movies scare me now a days, and i like it when something actually can scare me.

sometimes i see horror movies because i want to laugh as well. i think there is a new genre of movies out now, "horror/comedy" as one type. there are just too many movies that are supposed to be scary that are hilarious (ie childs play movies).

EDIT: also, movies that look freaky really catch my attention. and by freaky i don't mean gore me to death, i mean ones that make you feel as though if you were in that situation it would be freaky as hell. also ones that just are in messed up situations, the types you would NEVER expect to be in, nor would you ever want to be in. go see SAW for a recent, good horror flick (good movie doesn't imply good acting ;)).

I agree. Psychological Thrillers scare me. Because it's something that can actually happen.

I like the adrenaline rush from being scared sh!tless, but at the same time I know that I am in no real danger, so I feel somewhat secure. Kinda like watching people fight from far away

That's a pretty good question. Horror movies are probably my favorite genre for some reason, but I can't really explain why. I think it's the attempt of a writer to try and scare you. I like to see if they can live up to the test and put me on the edge of my seat.

I tend to think what it would be like to be in the shoes of the victims and determine what I would do differently, or how they approach certain situations. Unfortunately, many horror movies do a very poor job of giving victims any kind of intellect whatsoever.

Lastly, I think they can be absolutely hilarious. Perfect example is from Friday the 13th, part 6 where Jason is reborn and he storms through the woods, finds a campsite, and picks a girl up while she's still in her sleeping bag and tosses her into a tree. Sounds sick, but if you see it, you can find the humor because its such a ridiculous situation. Most times the killers have a marginally un-fair advantage.

/end babble

EDIT: I think I posted a bit too late. People said the same sort of thing above.

I just like evil, especially when it is well written.

Pinhead: Human dreams... such fertile ground for the seeds of torment. You're so ripe Joey, and it's harvest time.
Joey: [crying] But this isn't fair you can't!
Pinhead: Save your tears. I'll reap your sorrow slowly. I have centuries to discover the things that make you whimper.
Joey: You bastard you invaded my mind!
Pinhead: You think your nighttime world is closed to me? Your mind is so naked. A book that yearns to be read. A door that begs to be opened.

Exactly. Scary movies are a form of controlled danger. Much like rollercoasters, there is a feeling of being in peril either through suspension of disbelief as in movies or the controlled jostling of the thrill ride. The situations appear to be dangerous, but are not. It's about the release of adrenaline.

As others have said, the element of fear achieved when suspension of disbelief is successful and also, I've always just liked bizarre twists on reality. The same reason I've always liked nightmares and surreal dreams.

i don't like most horror movies.

if they are really scary because I don't like feeling scared.

And if they aren't scary they seem stupid.

But the ones that are unintentionally funny sometimes I like. But not if they're gory.
