In Europe today, they oversold tickets to a soccer game. Fans, wanting to see the game, stampeded into the stadium. This led to many people being crushed against barbed wire fenses and left over 35 people dead and tens of others injured.

Then, after they cleared the bodies away, the started the game claiming they were afraid that if they shut down the game there would be a riot.

And, to think, some idiot nominated soccer for a Nobel Peace Prize a few months back.

What a bunch of idiots.

You know, people bitch and moan about school shootings in the U.S., well at least we don't have people freaking trampled to death at a damn sporting event. :|

Europeans are crazy about their football. My sister was over in Malta when one team lost to another (sorry for being ambiguous but I totally forget who was playing). A bar fight broke out and people just started randomly throwing beer bottles. My sister got hit in the head and the bartender had to grab her and throw her behind the bar before she got hurt any further (she's like 5'4 I think).

The sad part is that they probably would have rioted if the game was cancelled. The police over there have such problems with a small group of people inciting violence they routinely tape the faces of fans in the stadium so they can record who is frequently present during a violent clash, and then hopefully stop them the next time.

Edit
Hmm, since when is South Africa in Europe;) This actually happened in Johannesburg.

I bet they didn't even oversell tickets. A lot of the tickets were probably from scalpers and weren't legitimate. If this is the case, the scalpers will hopefully be caught and dealt with harshly.

vi_edit, no but outfielders in baseball often get D-batteries thrown at them from people in the 700 level of some stadium.

Fallout....you got no rights to call someone an idiot. after all soccer riots happen all the time in europe. I can give you many links to riots in different countries in europe. it seems like the dumb ones are not the americans cause i don't remember the last time a riot happened here.
