Ok, so on radio stations around here, an anti-AIDS website has been playing adverstisements. That's fine. But the content of the ad goes like this:

"Educate yourself. Go to knowhivaids.org"

Maybe, or it could be like this:

"Educate yourself. Go to nohivaids.org"

Based on the context in which it's said, I honsetly have no idea whether they mean "no" or "know". You'd think someone would actually listen to the radio spot before playing it. They don't spell out the address or anything.

Compare relevancy:

Educate and know

Educate and no

The purpose of the education is to get rid of HIV/AIDS, correct? Why wouldn't "no" work?

I think the purpose of the message was to understand HIV, not to just "No HIV", it's a little ignorant to reject something you hardly know anything about. Hence the education.

It's a terminal illness, how much do you really have to know about it before deciding that you don't want it?

I agree with notfred, its best not to have a website address that can be spelled two different ways from the pronouciation.

I agree it was a bad ad, but at the same time it's not terribly hard to rationalize.

Are you the reason for the name calling sticky? Ever think about the possibility that there's more to it than that? Such as helping a loved one survive HIV, or advances in medicine for those who have it?

Okay guys.. It's obvious to most of us, but stereotypically, the type of people that should be learning about AIDS aren't too keen on reading comprehension.

the very fact that you are having this discussion tells me that it isn't obvious...second of all a couple posters up...isn't the target demographic for this ad going to have even more trouble or at the very least...shoudlnt' you make it as easy as possible for them?

I realize what you're trying to say, but your post can still be read as:

"how do you know you won't like HIV until you try it?"

Sounds to me like you LIKE AIDS.
