Horrible, Horrible image corruption in HL2

So

Lifer
For the first ~15 hours of HL2, everything was perfect, except for some small stuttering, then out of nowhere, textures, text, and even the HUD started to get badly corrupted. PIC

At first, I figured 'well, I haven't restarted in ~4 days' so I restarted. No dice, same as before.

So, I updated my 9600 Pro's drivers, fitrst to the 4.11's then to 4.12 beta...no luck, so I rolled the drivers back to the previous version I was using (from mid August). Still the same behavior.

I've tried dusting out my case, in case it was some sort of heating thing. The fan on my 9600 seems to be working fine though.

I've tried reinstalling HL2, twice, the second time deleting all the GCF files :|.

I've tried going back to an earlier part of the game, but it does it there now too.

I've tried playing past that point, but it pops up again.

Other FPS's are still fine...I tried call of duty and all was well.

A quicksave/reload fixes everything, for another ~10 minutes. I am extremely frustrated here.... any advice?

Also, which textures get corrupted seems to be random. Sometimes the skin for one weapon gets screwed up, other times another, somtimes only the environment. The only thing that seems to get consistantly fubared is the dropships.

yikes! I would try messing with some of the settings, AA turned off/on, Ansio off/on, fast write is off, right?

I haven't touched AA/Ansio so I'd assume that it's not them. I remember there used to be an option in the ATI drivers to mess with fast writes before, but I can't seem to find it in this version of the driver (4.9)...any idea where I should look? Or should I just give up and head to the bios to turn them off?

How significant of a preformance hit am I facing with fast writes off? (going to test now)

ATI cards should have the disabled anyways....atelast the 9700/9800 series cards. You will not notice a difference like screw3d said.

Fast Writes are definitely disabled, still getting the corruption. :| Updated the drivers to 4.11 again, still no effect, but they confirm that fast writes are disabled.

Might not make a difference but have you tried a defrag? I know after I got HL@ from Steam, my drive was fugged up.

Shouldn't have an effect on the textures. Besides, I have the collectors edition, not from steam.

I had a problem, but I deleted everything and redownloaded and it fixed it. Mine wasn't nearly as bad though.

Everything? Steam too? I pulled everything but steam, but I was hesitant to delete that directory.

<bump> for the morning crowd.

Yea, everything including steam itself. That was probably overkill though.

Yes, as mentioned in the OP, I tried Call of Duty and all was well as before. It is worth noting that call of duty is in OpenGL game, IIRC. So hardware is ruled out, but DirectX is not. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to reinstall DX, as the installer tells me I'm up to date.

Edit: Just checked, I am running DX 9.0c, so no hope of just updating. 🙁
Edit 2: And it seems that all the DX uninstall utilities out there cause more trouble than they're worth, so I think I really wanna avoid that route.

Well, for the heck of it, try turning on AA/AF to see if it fixes it. If that doesn't work, maybe a reformat will work. If not, then email Valve and request your bug fix.
