Just happened here in Suwanee Georgia Home Depot store. Guy was cleaning the door and got caught in the door as it rolled back up. Store is now closed pending OSHA investigation.

Home Depot is one big safety hazard.
they stack chainsaws, toilets and other cranium crushing objects on shelves above your head.
to be fair tho:they have some kick arse carts to surf around the store on.

27 people were killed last year in Home Depot stores. 90% of the time it is from customer stupidity, or employees not folowing safety guidelines. The other 10% it is just bad luck. With allt he customers and machinery in those types of stores, I would have thought it would be much higher.

In my store we had a customer who went under a banner that was streached across an isle. The associate screamed after him to get out, and to tell the forklift guy to stop in the next isle. ( as assicates you are not allowed to touch a customer. ) A pallet of rugs ended up falling and nailing the guy. ended up breaking a few bones, but he lived. And sued us of course.

Getting stuck in a rollup door is not exactly easy. All but one at my store were hand operated. The other had so many safety stops on it it was not even funny. I have no idea how this could have happened, unless the stores down there use a different type of door.

OSHA investigation? I bet its due to lack of common sense.

just like your post?

I also agree, lack of common sense is the major cause of work injures. Its lawyers that make it the other way around in the court system

basicly, it is a door that is used over large openings ( and some sheds ). It rools up into a rube at the top, instead of rooling back like your garage door. Most are chain operated by hand, but some of the larger ones are operated with an electric motor.

you know, those big chainlink fence looking doors that they have in front of each store at the mall? I'm guessing it's the same type of thing.

Yeah I've seen some made of a fabric material and is just opened very, very quickly with motors.

I've seen one at the Home Depot that just flew up at lightspeed. It went WHAP, and the thing was opened... and it was a tall door, like 20ft tall.

They are actually a nylon plastic material. Those don't actually roll up, they just get pulled into a "clump" at the top. and yes, those are extreamly fast, and powered by a very large 440v motor.

I don't really understand how someone could get caught in a door like that when it rolls up. Could someone shed any light on what kind of injury this may have caused?

Several years back here in Springfield Or. a guy got caught up in a HUGE chipper. I guess his shirt caught in the feeder mechanisim and there was nothing anyone could do, since it took several minutes to shut the thing down. They guy KNEW he was a goner, and had enough time to take his wedding ring off, toss it to a co worker and ask him to give it to his wife and tell her he loved her...

Now THAT'S a Horrible way to die!

Are you saying that if an employee at your store saw a customer in imminent danger of being crushed by some falling object, the policy is not to touch the customer even if you could push them to safety???

Either can I. The only thing I can think of, is someone hit a remote for the door to go up, and the guy got his shirt stuck on it, and the door lifted him off the ground, then he fell onto his head and broke his neck. That is all I can think of. And even that is a streach, because unless the door is damaged, there isn't mutch to catch yourself on.

No, I was wondering that also. I think I may know what it is but can't imagine it killing me.
