My friend just upgraded his computer to an X2-4400+, 7800GTX, and a DFI Lan Party motherboard.

Now when he plays games, especially BF2, he gets horrible crashes. Crashes to desktop. Hard locks. You name it.

Here's his system:

-AMD X2-4400+ Processor
-DFI Lan Party NF4 Ultra D Motherboard
-MSI NX7800 GTX Video
-Creative Labs X-Fi Extreme Music
-2GB OCZ Platinum Rev 2 Memory

He's tried the latest Nvidia drivers and also the previous drivers. Same problems. When he locks up, he gets weird, static sound and everything freezes.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yea it'd help if you list the power supply, thats probably the most important component.

yeah, that and try also:
1. patching bf2
2. lowering game settings
3. make sure sp2 is installed

Sorry, forgot about the PSU.

He has an Antec Truepower 550.

Everything is patched to the latest versions.

Shame for such a great game and rig...

tell him to try booting without the sound card and only one stick of ram. Then do it with only the essentials for booting.

Apparently he has problems in City of Heroes as well, but they're not as bad as BF2.

Now in BF2 he's getting random disconnects no matter what NIC he uses.

Sounds like a piece of hardware is messe up. Try removing 1 stick of ram, and putting the remaining stick into another slot.

That could be the problem the AMD64 built in memory controller isnt ment to handel more than two sticks of ram

try running two sticks.

Try to do 2x512 or 2x1GB. Test in memtest 1 stick at a time, if nothing else helps. Also, there is the off chance that the X2 driver from AMD's website could help, though it certainly isn't required. I understand, because my PC was corrupted, and BF2 calls a loud call. Good luck

so*

yes, the memory controller on the chip isnt ment to support more than two sticks of ram read that paper that comes with the processor and you will see. If you wanted to get a gig you should get a one gig stick so you can upgrade to two gigis later on. if you going to get two gigs dont get 512x4 get two one gig sticks.

I was just about to post that before I read your post.

The damn creative cards are the biggest pain in the ass. Now it is always the first place I start when my comp locks up. (well, it doesn't lock up anymore because I took the damn thing out.)
