A goof is somebody that doesn't look sharp.
So look sharp and match or slightly above the dress of the people you talked to. It would be a good idea to simply ask "what is the dress there?".
IMHO there are only two modes - business casual and business.
Business = full on suit. Business casual = sharp pants/ironed and clean looking button down shirt, nice shoes, dark socks. Make a good first impression.

funny story, I went for a huge interview and they flew me out there a long time ago. I forgot my dress shoes and had to wear my travel/tennis shoes to the interview in a suit.
I walked into the room with 10 people eyeing me up and down and simply greeted them with "Hello, you each get one joke on my shoes, but only one. Who's up?"
