How do you fix this? I've tried different paper, cleaning the dust out of the printer, different cartridges. The text smudges at any printing speed/quality setting. Or is the fix a laser printer?

Did you try cleaning the print heads? There should be a software option to do that.

The problem is the sponges or pads at the parked position are full of ink. I had this problem on an old HP deskjet and all I did was use alchohol to clean the bottom of the carridge and the sponges where the head parks. It prints like new.

If it is HP, the print head is in the cartridge. An ink saturated parking area could be the problem. Again - what brand of ink spitter?

It's a Canon. The cartridges just have a sponge. Would it be possible to clean the heads myself? They seem pretty inaccessible.
