hey everybody
well i posted this same thread at the ubuntu forums but didn't get any responses. i was hoping some linux user could help me out with my problem:

Hey guys,
thanks for all of the help so far. ihave ubuntu working successfully with my ATI graphics acceleration working properly woo.

I'm still having trouble getting the magnifier in gnopernicus working. I installed gnopernicus and all dependencies from synaptic and everything seemed to go ok. When i run gnopernicus my computer speaker (not normal speakers) makes a beep. The program loads but nothing happens. I can access all of the programs menus and whatnot but no screen magnification. I'm not even sure where to start to diagnose this problem. I run it from applications>accessability>screen magnifier.

any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

I am not sure what is going on with the magnafication stuff. I didn't even know that gnomericus existed before you wanted help with it. :) Although I can see how it would be handy.

Best bet is to check out Ubuntu forums for Ubuntu specific help. It looks like there is a problem with how the package is built.

Go in the Ubuntu forums www.ubuntuforums.org and complain that your trying to use adaptive/disabled technology type stuff but it's erroring out. Hopefully you will get attention fairly quickly. I am going to play around with it a bit myself.

For simple mangification check out the xmag utility. It's pretty pathetic but it will magnify small sections of the screen.

rhm...

that's what it looks like for me.. same messages and everything but the thing actually starts up. No change in messages and it successfully starts.

Are you sure that it's not set at 'start up minimized'? In default gnome setup you have a drop down window selector in the upper left and a task bar at the bottom. Check in the drop down window selector and make sure that it's not sitting in there minimized.

Also check out and make sure that it's not running in the background anywere...

Go:
ps aux | grep gnop

and if it's running try killing it and starting it over..

killall gnopernicus

hi drag, thanks for the help,

nah i made sure it wasnèt starting up minimized.

it is wierd, ièll run it from the menu, my system speaker will beep and the program loads but there is no magnifcation going on. I have reinstalled gnopernicus and ubuntu, nothing. I have aslo installed everything in synaptic that looks like libatk (the error message i was getting) still nothing.

I did make a thread at the ubuntuforums but so far no bites....

Did you get the program to successfully work for youÉ Also what does rhm meanÉ

thanksagain, i hope i can get this working, or its the end of my linux days for a hile.

rhm is like going 'hmmm' to yourself, but's it's more like 'hrmmm', except this time it's rhm.

sort of like

arrrrhrrmmmmmm.....

Basicly it doesn't mean anything. :)

Also I realised I mistook your question a bit. You got it started, but can't get it to magnify anything... while I thought you just couldn't get it running at all. :/

Unfortunatly I'm at work now so I won't be able to look at it until I get back in the morning. I've never heard of the prorgam before so I don't know much about it.

I've gotten working just fine on my Debian Sid laptop, which has (I beleive) Gnome 2.10 isntalled which would be the same as Ubuntu hoary (again, I beleive). So it should be very similar, but if you not using the latest version of Ubuntu, I'm not sure.

Try going thru the 'Desktop' menu ---> Preferences ----> Accessibility ----> Assistive Technology Support

Then in the dialog that pops up make sure that 'enable assistive technologies' is checked and then 'screenreader' and 'magnifier' are checked. Click 'close' then log out of your gnome session thru Desktop ---> Logout --> logout.

That's what it got working for me and I have the same console messages and everything.

hmmm, the only thing that i can think that is different is that i don't have the screenreader checked... i try it though.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact taht i'm using ATI driver fglrx. With these drivers i'm getting aboug 2700 frames/second. Still though, the program never magnified when i was using the generic ubuntu drivers getting only 300 frames/second.

Maybeif i tried the development version of ubuntu or something...

That sucks.

Go and stick a post in the bug report section, that's probably a better place to get the developer's attention. Also be sure to mention that's for a accessibility device, I dont' think most people would know what gnopernicus is from right off the bat.

As for switching to Ubuntu breezy, I suppose it's worth a shot if otherwise your going to uninstall the thing completely, but otherwise I don't think it's a good idea... From what I understand it's pretty broken. But if nothing else works, definately go for it.
