Hooking up two routers on same network

I am sure this has been asked before, sorry in advance.

I am trying to figure out how to hook up two routers on the same network. I have one router connected to the modem in the basement, I want to add another router upstairs so I can connect two computers wired to that second router.

How do I go about configuring the second router? I looked up so guides on it and I did what they said but it did not work. Should I have to do anything to the first router?

What is the connection between the two routers? Wired? If you have a wired connection upstairs, all you need is a switch, not a router. You need a wireless ethernet bridge, if you want to wirelessly connected two devices upstairs via wired ports, without a wired connection downstairs.

If you want to extend your wireless network, and have a wired connection between upstairs and downstairs, then you would connect the 2nd router via a wired LAN port, and disable DHCP on that router, and set the same SSID and password (possibly different channel), and then it would function as a secondary AP.

The connections between the routers are wired.

I do have a switch. What port do I use to connect the first router to the switch? I want both computers upstairs to be a wired connection. Does the switch need to be configured?

Are you sure you want the second router to function as a router (i.e., give out its own addresses)?

Why not let the first router do all the routing? Then the second device (working as a switch) would merely allow you to physically connect the computers to it, but not provide routing. Instead, the first router would hand out the network addresses to the new computers.

The biggest thing to miss would be using the "wrong" port - you'd plug the cable from the first router into one of the LAN ports (numbered 1-4) of the 2nd router if you want to use the 2nd as a switch, as pointed out above by VirtualLarry.

turn off the dhcp on the second router and give it an ip of plus one the other router

192.168.0.1 for the first and 192.168.0.2 for the second with the dhcp off and on the second router don't use the wan use a lan port.
