Hooking up the HUB

Ok, I just bought a DLink hub. (I don't care about security, this is a temporary thing until I move in a month). I connected my Athlon and my sisters iMac. The Athlon works fine sharing the static IP...the iMac however, doesn't. Is there some sort of software I need? Even when I took the cable out of the hub for the Athlon the iMac still wouldn't work with the hub. What's the deal, as I don't know a lot about networking...just the basics.

Ummm...we're not even getting the basics from your initial post.

What are you trying to do with this setup?
Share files? Share a printer? Share a broadband connection?

Some more info would clarify this so we can help.

What do hubs and security have to do with each other?

Anyhow, do you have DHCP or a static ip?
EDIT: and how many ips are you allowed to occupy?

one static ip

I heard that HUBS are easier to break through compared to a switch or router...but that's what the sales guy told me...probably trying to get more money out of me.

Switches are easy to sniff off of. Anyhow, with 1 static ip you have another machine acting as a gateway right? Which machine?

I'm betting neither, from what I could glean from the initial post.

If you only have one static IP, you MUST have something acting as a gateway router, either some software loaded on a machine with two NICs, or a hardware router. There's really no other option.

If you can, I'd take the hub back and get a SOHO router from either SMC, Linksys, or Netgear. Get one with at least 4 switch ports in it.

ICS, sygate, wingate(?), linux + IPTables, OpenBSD + IPF/IPNAT

EDIT: Of course you will need a second nic in the windows machine
