Hooking up SB Live to a Receiver. New SC Recommendation.

Currently I've got a SB Live 4.1 that I just want to tryout on my Denon 3802 receiver to see how good the sound quality.

The problem comes down to connection. Sound Cards have a Front and Rear channel. While Receivers have a Left and Right channel. Is there a way to do this to allow for 4.1 from the soundcard to receiver, without having to get a new card with digital output?

Anyway, I need to buy a new card. Whats the best overall Sound Card for a HTPC. For music and movies.

For sound in a mainstream card, the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz has no equal. There are audiophile cards better, at close to 200 dollars

Enable LiveSurround! and then just hitch the front line-out to your receiver's line-in. LiveSurround tells the Live to output a simulated Dolby stream which should be decoded by the receiver to the appropriate speakers.
Don't know if that will work for DTS/DD since I think you need a an optical or SP/DIF connection from the source to the receiver, but it definitely works for ProLogic.

Jzero - much appreciated. I'll probably have to install the Live software. Thats probably why I didn't realize you could do it through their software, cause i'm only using the drivers.

I'll go try that in just a few minutes. I need a new card though 😀 Need to go all digital for the SQ

I was looking at getting that Turtle Beach. I only found the OEM on newegg.

Here

I don't see any digital outputs? Unless the digital output is still a 1/8" jack? Or maybe the OEM card is lacking a digital output.

What sort of digital output type am I looking for in a soundcard? Optical? SPDIF?

Santa Cruz rules for music. I have one and love it.

At Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc., you can buy a 1/8" stereo jack to RCA Y-adapter cable. The 1/8" stereo jack goes to your sound card and the left/right RCA plugs on the other side of the cable (get one as long as you need, 6-12 feet) go into the receiver. For 4 channel connections, you need 2 cables, one for the front channel and one for the rear, which requires 4 input RCA plugs on the receiver.
This would work with both the Santa Cruz and your old SB Live.

Vic, i got the cords last night. What I was confused about was that a SC sends channels via Front and Rear. While a Recever breaks channels down via Left and Right, and includes both the front and left for each side.

The problem with using that is the fact that the receiver does not have any device channel that accepts quad RCA inputs, only dual (L&R).

So using a 1/8" split Y to RCA for each of the channels out of the video card wouldn't work.

Right now i just have the front channel setup with LiveSurround from the soundcard. I have the receiver set to 5 channel surround, so the music plays through all channels.

Hayabusarider - I got the ideal of the Digital channel. My only question is, what type of connection is that? It appears to be a 1/8" output. While my receiver doesnt accept any 1/8", but it does accept Digital Coaxial, Optical, and RCA. An i wrong about the connection or do you use a 1/8" to RCA/Coaxial connection?
