Every Phone, Fax, Answering Machine, that uses the same line need a filter.

The ISP usually sends few with the modem.

You might want to read this as well, http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html

P.S. Some DSL ISPs provide a unit that is a combo Modem/Router. There is nothing special about it but it can be confusing when one thinks that he his installing a Modem while he actully deals with an Interface of a Router.

Thanks. I read a little about it at various places and am a little confused about the filter. If the connection is straight from the wall, to the modem, to the computer, does it need a filter? and if there is a phone, does it matter what order it goes in? I'm assuming it would be, wall, phone, modem, computer. But i may be wrong.

Oh yeah! One more thing. What about the software side of it. The computer has Windows 98, is there anything special i need to do for that?

The filter goes on the None DSL Equipment.

If the same outlet has a phone, you need to put on the outlet a splitter, the DSL Modem connects directly to the splitter the phone connected to the splitter through a filter.

Equipment that is on other outlets, but the same tel. Line, need filters too.

A lot of modems have a phone line out with a filter built into the modem. If his doesn't, you might look into a different unit. A splitter inline is almost always is a bad idea.

Wall > splitter > phone cord > modem = bad

Wall > phone cord > modem = good

Plus, his ISP should be walking him through install and config. If not, call me and we can do a Qhost change and get some real support...

The principle is the same is the same whether it is am inline filter or in the Modem.

Putting components in the same Plastic Box does not change the principle.

It is much more beneficial to learn the principle than to try to learn the content of any plastic box that is out there.

Not sure if this will help or hurt.
