My buddy has a Mac with Garageband and some type of 'preamp' to hook his guitar into that hooks into his computer.

I want to hook my guitar to my computer, what is a reasonably good application to use for this?

What non-Mac software will be similar to Garageband for me?

Thanks

Audacity is very basic and easy to use. Gets the job done for simple stuff.

If you want something a little more professional, try Steinberg Cubase or Adobe Audition (v3 is coming this November, supports Vista).

The quality will really depend on what kind of device you are using to connect to your computer. I personally used to use a PODXT Live (USB interface) and the sound quality can be quite good if you adjust your settings right and use the right tweaks in the software.

I have been recording and producing music on PC's before we even had things like cubase. I was pumping voltage thru a TB303 via an early form of Midi. BUT, anyways, About you and your needs, Check this out http://www.m-audio.com/product...FastTrackPro-main.html. That is an all in one interface that you can stick your guitar into. IT ALSO comes with Alberton Live lite. Which is an all in one recording studio. Very basic yet perfect for your needs. I use cubase personally. The Type of software one uses is usually the type of software that one started using. I have used Cubase since original free beta.

If you need help, keep this thread alive, I will keep my eye on it.

Line6 Guitar Port- been using it for two years now. It's one of my favorite gadgets :) Plus, it's only $99, and you get nearly unlimited effects models that can be outputted to an amp.

Check it out: Link for the lazy

It also has a $7.95 subscription service that gives you access to lessons, tones, tabs, articles, and more. I really enjoy that feature.

The inputs on most sound cards won't be able to handle the dynamic range of an electric instrument output very well - you'll need some sort of compression like that preamp provides for your friend.
